This 7 inch fillet and boning knife is being used as a sharp, well balanced trimming tool for brisket, BBQ meats, and other precise cuts. The high carbon stainless blade is described as very sharp out of the box, with good heft and a comfortable handle, and the same line is said to hold an edge well. The main caution is that it is not flexible, so it suits deboning and meat trimming better than fish work. The listing is also criticized as misleading about Japanese origin, since the knife is made in China and the steel is framed as Japanese. High carbon care matters too, because rust is a concern without washing, drying, and oiling.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes, the discount appears at checkout, and it applies to both the 7-inch and 9-inch versions. Several buyers reported paying about $25-$26 after tax.

  • Yes. It has been used successfully for trimming brisket, BBQ pork shoulder, steaks, and meat slicing, with reports of strong balance, good heft, and a very sharp edge out of the box. It is more of a finesse knife and is less flexible than some fish fillet knives.

  • At around $25-$26, it is described as a decent buy if you want a sharp, well-balanced knife for meat trimming. The main caveat is that the brand's pricing and origin labeling are viewed as misleading, so the value depends on whether you accept a China-made knife with Japanese-style branding.

  • No. The knife is made in China, and the "Japanese" wording refers to the blade style and steel description rather than the manufacturing location. The listing is misleading if you expect a Japan-made knife.

  • It can. The blade is high-carbon steel, so it needs washing, drying, and ideally oiling after use to prevent rust or corrosion.

"Japanese steel" as if that makes it a Japanese knife
When it says "Japanese knife", we as customers assume the knives are made in Japan by Japanese knife makers.

The item title is misleading. "HOSHANHO" is not a Japanese word.

"HOSHANHO... Japanese INSPIRED Fish Knives for Meat Poultry Cutting" or "HOSHANHO Chinese knife made with Japanese steel" would be more accurate.

I am not sure of the quality of this knife. It seems like customers like the knife and the price is very good at $25.

All of my knives are made in Japan by Japanese knife makers. I bought them in Japan. They are superb quality and very sharp. It feels very good in my hand.

Is this decent quality?
Why don't you read reviews on Amazon and decide? Or spend $25 and try it out by yourself? People seem to like the knife, according to the reviewers on Amazon.

Excellent Chinese knifes. Don't know why it says Japanese in the title and has a dumb Japanese name. Japanese didn't learn how to make a good knife from the Chinese until the 2nd millennium.

I guess the average American consumers are pretty dull. Can't appreciate a good Chinese knife for what it is.
"Dumb Japanese name" is indeed not a Japanese word. It's Chinese writing and Chinese pronunciation. Perhaps, you shouldn't talk about things you don't understand while pretending like you know in the public. It doesn't look good on you.

These knives may very well be fine. My comment is that a reputable seller does not need to pretend that a product comes from one country when, in fact, it comes from another, with generally lower quality standards. That, on its own, I might have overlooked, but the additional gaming with the retail price vs sale price (with a regular discount of close to 50%) just screams "STAY AWAY".
The knife may be a good quality, but I agree the misleading title alone is not appealing to me. They could have said "a knife made with Japanese steel" or "Japanese INSPIRED knife".

is made of Japanese high carbon stainless steel for good corrosion resistance and cutting performance....

SO either they are lying to us or telling the truth.

But I highly doubt a company would bring in Japan high end steel to make knives in China. Therefore I don't trust this company... that is the bottom line.

I will also add that Slickdeals.net does not seem to care if they are promoting FALSE items... I guess as long as they get paid, that is all what matters.

I know someone at SLICKDEALS will see this post... SLICKDEALS NEEDS to do better to protect the people who come here. NO MORE FALSE ADVERTISEMENTS, especially if you can spot it a mile away. SLICKDEALS HAS FAILED EVERYONE WHO PURCHASED THIS ITEM.

SD Staff scam. Chinese product with an inflated price that's been reduced to the normal price. Not quality and not a deal.
Yea. Misleading. I hate the modern age we live in with everything being "enshItification" now.

Bought this exact knife in June of last year for 26 bucks with tax. Excellent knife. I use it for meat slicing and brisket prepping.

How long does it keep its edge before you need to resharpen it?

25 bucks for a 7" high carbon steel knife is pretty reasonable, but i would rather get a low carbon steel boning knife, as carbon steel easily gets stain spots or even corrosion, and I doubt if a 10cr15 can be done as semi flex. Another funny thing i found is this japanese brand only offers two yanagi, both of which mention Japanese 10cr15 steel is being used, but one marked 60+-2 HRC and another one marked 62HRC, didn't mention anything about the heat treat hardening process

Package it as a coupon and suddenly it's a "deal". I'm amazed how many people don't check the price history.
I miss the old days of SD. The $500 Webber bbq for $10. Now it's $300 and they are all gone before the store even opens because a reseller bought all the stock.
