Great for kids rooms. Especially the curious ones who like to randomly play with the vent panels... 😅

Google Nest Temperature Sensor 2nd Gen is a small add on for an existing Nest thermostat that helps manage comfort in a specific room instead of the whole house. It is especially useful for bedrooms and kids rooms when the main thermostat sits in a hallway or another room, and it can switch control on a schedule or average readings across sensors. The 2nd Gen housing looks nicer than the first generation, but the average between sensors feature only works with the Gen 4 thermostat. Range and accuracy can depend on placement, with some setups seeing weaker reach or readings a few degrees off.

it is just a smart thermometer? it tells my nest thermostat the temp from other rooms? Unless I have a way to keep the hallway warm and cool another room, I don't see the value? Please correct me if I am wrong.

It's used primarily for sensing temperature in one room (say a kids room) when the main thermostat is in another room (master bedroom). Helpful when there are drastic temperature differences between rooms

I have one for my kid's room and it's great to keep control of the temp just for that room and not the entire house.

My nest thermostat is in the living room. Is there any way that I can set it so that the daytime temperature is controlled using the main unit, and then at night it shifts to the master bedroom, where this new sensor would be placed?

Can this be used without the thermometer? Thinking of using this for a reptile enclosure

Yes, it's what I do. During the day it works as normal and I set it to switch to my son's room after 9 pm daily.

Needs to be associated with a existing thermostat - it's not a stand alone sensor.

Yes you change it for 4 periods to switch from thermostat to any sensor.

It's configurable but the default is that it uses the average temps of all sensors (and thermostat itself)

It's great if you have a zoned system so you can see the temps everywhere and level things out. Or if you have smart vents have them open/close depending on the temp
