Google Nest Temperature Sensor 2nd Gen is a small add on for an existing Nest thermostat that helps manage comfort in a specific room instead of the whole house. It is especially useful for bedrooms and kids rooms when the main thermostat sits in a hallway or another room, and it can switch control on a schedule or average readings across sensors. The 2nd Gen housing looks nicer than the first generation, but the average between sensors feature only works with the Gen 4 thermostat. Range and accuracy can depend on placement, with some setups seeing weaker reach or readings a few degrees off.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It is commonly used in bedrooms and kids' rooms to keep that room comfortable even when the main thermostat is elsewhere, especially when temperatures differ a lot between rooms.
You can assign it to specific time periods and switch control from the thermostat to any sensor for up to four periods. The default behavior uses the average temperature of all sensors plus the thermostat itself.
It can help if your zoned setup still relies on one primary thermostat or manual zoning, because it lets you monitor and steer comfort by room. If each zone already has its own thermostat and dampers, it may add little.
It can be spot on, but placement matters; poor placement can make readings seem 2-3 degrees off, and one Gen 2 unit reportedly had about 10 feet less range than a Gen 1 in the same home.
No. It must be paired with an existing Nest thermostat and is used to measure temperature in one room so the thermostat can control comfort from that room instead of the main thermostat location.

1st gen. I have the first gen but I am not happy with them
It's configurable but the default is that it uses the average temps of all sensors (and thermostat itself)
