Google Nest Temperature Sensor 2nd Gen is a small add on for an existing Nest thermostat that helps manage comfort in a specific room instead of the whole house. It is especially useful for bedrooms and kids rooms when the main thermostat sits in a hallway or another room, and it can switch control on a schedule or average readings across sensors. The 2nd Gen housing looks nicer than the first generation, but the average between sensors feature only works with the Gen 4 thermostat. Range and accuracy can depend on placement, with some setups seeing weaker reach or readings a few degrees off.

  • The sensor can help manage room-to-room temperature differences by switching control to the target room.

  • The sensor can measure temperature in a specific room when the main Nest thermostat is located elsewhere.

  • The sensor can be useful in zoned or smart-vent setups by showing temperatures across areas and supporting temperature-based vent behavior.

  • The sensor can be accurate when placement matches the room you want to control.

  • The sensor requires association with an existing Nest thermostat and cannot operate as a standalone temperature sensor.

  • The sensed temperature can run about 2-3 degrees off from expected readings.

  • The Gen 2 sensor may have shorter effective range than Gen 1 in some homes.

  • The averaging behavior across sensors is limited and only works with the Gen 4 thermostat.

It's great if you have a zoned system so you can see the temps everywhere and level things out. Or if you have smart vents have them open/close depending on the temp
I don't see how this would help you at all for a zoned system. A Zoned system should already have it's own thermostat in controlled areas along w dampers if shared.

If its a mildly newer account yes, but I've worked on setups that are 20 years on that were zoned but one primary thermostat and zoning done manually

why not
The temperature they 'sense' is always 2-3 degrees off than what it should be

Is the 2nd gen any different from
1st gen. I have the first gen but I am not happy with them
2nd gen has a more beveled, pebble like housing (it looks nicer). Functionally they are both supposed to be the same. However, my one gen 2 has about 10 feet less range than my gen 1 (at least in my home). Where the gen 1 worked inside our master bedroom, the gen 2 only works right up to the MBR door, but on the outside of the room.

you really only need enough for the highly occupied spaces in the house. For me it is two.

It's configurable but the default is that it uses the average temps of all sensors (and thermostat itself)
ahhhhh, now that would be very useful! Thank you

I don't have that problem with mine at all. It's spot on. Sounds like poor sensor placement if nothing else.

I use these sensors in the bedroom because the main thermostat is in the hallway under a skylight and I set the thermostat to be controlled from the sensor. It's sometimes up to a 7 degree difference and I want the rooms to be comfortable. I can use an average of both or go off on or or the other.

Keep in mind that the average between sensors feature only works with the Gen 4 thermostat.

Ok. Makes sense. My current home has dampers and one of them seems to randomly open/close when its running Supposed to stay closed. Im a guessing bad damper motor? This common ?

FYI, Google Nest discontinued their 1st/2nd gen thermostat to stop working over internet (works only in offline). They're selling IoT product with kill timer.

They're being sued over it.

It's used primarily for sensing temperature in one room (say a kids room) when the main thermostat is in another room (master bedroom). Helpful when there are drastic temperature differences between rooms
Useless
