The Winix 5510 is a strong value air purifier, especially for shoppers comparing it with pricier Costco models. It is praised for solid cleaning performance, good allergy help, and features that feel close to the C909 for much less money. The main tradeoffs are smaller room coverage, fewer filter options, and recurring reports of bearing noise or fan wear over time. Filter replacements can also be expensive, so long term maintenance matters. A practical pick if you want capable filtration without paying for the larger Costco unit.

Common Questions (5)

  • Some units develop loud bearing noise after about a year to five years, especially with heavy 24/7 use, and newer Winix models are reported to be less reliable than older 5500/5300-series units. Other units run for years without issues, so long-term durability can vary.

  • Adding a woven carbon prefilter can catch a lot of dust before it reaches the HEPA filter and may extend HEPA life. It also helps with allergy use, but odor reduction is still limited for strong smells like cooking or cat litter.

  • The bearing can be replaced, and the units use standard sealed 608 or skateboard bearings that are cheap and easy to source. The repair is doable but not always easy, and Winix reportedly does not sell replacement parts directly.

  • Yes. It has most of the same features for about half the price, but it handles a smaller space and does not support the same variety of specialty filters such as pet or allergen filters.

  • OEM replacement filters are about $110, which is close to the cost of the machine itself. That makes filter pricing a major ongoing cost to factor in before buying.

I can only comment from my experience. I have two of there products and never had this issue. So I didn't know that it is a known issue. has the company addressed it?
sorry, my comment wasn't meant directly at you, there are several similar posts in the thread.
I have 5 winix units (c545) and 2 make ghastly noise. Google/reddit seem to indicate the 5510 can suffer similarly. I'd still buy Winix, just with the understanding that it can be a dice roll for down the road.

Winix have a known issue with the noise, it's well documented. Just because your particular units work fine doesn't invalidate the concern or criticism.
Loud Humming, Rattling, or Whistling

If the unit is noisier than usual, it's typically an airflow or mechanical obstruction.

Check the Packaging: It sounds silly, but ensure you removed the plastic wrap from the new filters. This is a very common cause of high-pitched whistling.

Debris in the Fan: Unplug the unit and check the top grill. Sometimes a small object or a clump of pet hair falls into the blower fan, causing a clicking or rattling sound.

Mechanical Wear: If it's a high-pitched grinding sound, the motor bearings may be wearing out (common in older units or those run 24/7 on "Turbo").

Curious how to fix it?
Take it apart. Replace the bearing with whatever sealed 608 you want from Amazon .

I personally have bought 6 of the $70 refurbs direct from winix, only one has had this issue in several years running 24/7.

I just replaced my Winix with a Levoit 200S-P... it's much better. The Winix is a lot louder and the high pitched noise got worse and worse

I quit buying Winix products. Just about every air filter we bought (6 or so) developed really bad bearing noise right after the warranty was up. Thankfully between Costo returns and credit card extended warranty we were made whole. I highly recommend purchasing with a credit card that extends the warranty a year or two.
Maybe some people on this thread are deaf? lol. I Have had this bearing noise problem in this model and past Winix models. I've got 5 toda total in my house because I have bad allergies. But I keep buying these units nonetheless because they do a good job. Will have to look into greasing the bearings…

This is what I replaced my Winix units with as well. I also have the Coway Airmega 400 for larger rooms too.

I just bought one a week ago from Amazon for 179, I wonder if there is a way for me to get the difference back.
Start Return and see if they will refund. If not, return and order new.

Did the exact same thing after seeing another deal here, then the PF video. So I tried to refund via chat and they said no. I started a refund, then at the end they asked if I would take a $35 refund to keep product which I accepted. First time I ever saw this, so maybe AMZ is finally stopping the idiotic practice of having to return/reorder price reductions...

What do you guys use for replacement filters? The OEM ones are $110 - almost as much as the machine.
From where? I see $80 retail. They're on sale for $50 now.

There are other 3rd party ones that are even cheaper.
