The Winix 5510 is a strong value air purifier, especially for shoppers comparing it with pricier Costco models. It is praised for solid cleaning performance, good allergy help, and features that feel close to the C909 for much less money. The main tradeoffs are smaller room coverage, fewer filter options, and recurring reports of bearing noise or fan wear over time. Filter replacements can also be expensive, so long term maintenance matters. A practical pick if you want capable filtration without paying for the larger Costco unit.

  • The 5510 can support allergy-focused setups when extra woven carbon pre-filtering is added before the HEPA stage.

  • Subscribe and Save eligibility can lower the purchase price below the listed amount.

  • The Winix 5510 can work as a practical alternative when the Costco C909 is unavailable.

  • The unit can be kept running quietly with regular filter changes and periodic vacuuming of intake fins and inner housing.

  • Winix air purifiers can develop very bad bearing noise shortly after the warranty period ends.

  • Bearing replacement can be difficult in practice, and at least one repair attempt ended with discarding the unit.

  • OEM replacement filters can cost about $110, which can make ongoing maintenance expensive relative to the purifier price.

  • Carbon odor reduction can be limited for cat poop and cooking odors even when the carbon pellet is placed behind the HEPA filter.

I have both the 5500-2 and 5520. Hot tip: I added an extra woven carbon pre filter right after the mesh pre filter and moved the AOC carbon filter behind the hepa filter. The AOC filter seemed like a lousy pre filter given the large gaps between the carbon beads. The woven carbon filter that I added collects a lot of dust!

One of my kiddos has allergies and we put one in his room, it seems to have helped a lot!

I just bought one a week ago from Amazon for 179, I wonder if there is a way for me to get the difference back.
They generally don't give price adjustments, and may give a small courtesy credit, but probably not for this much money. I've had customer service recommend that I just buy a new one and return it under the higher priced purchase, which I've done many times.

Dust is supposed to be caught by pre filter and carbon is supposed to help absorb odors, unless I remember wrong..
Most people get carbon pellet versions for better performance instead of fabric carbon filter.

What do you guys use for replacement filters? The OEM ones are $110 - almost as much as the machine.

Yep, that's correct. However there's a lot of dust that gets thru the mesh pre filter. Adding the woven carbon filter should theoretically extend the life of the hepa filter. My setup goes like this: mesh (large dust) -> woven (finer dust) -> hepa (finest particles) -> carbon pellet (odor/voc).

Thanks!! Have a smaller Winix for the bedroom and was looking for a larger one for the living room. Saw the most recent Project Farm video where Winix destroyed all the other brands and was about to pull the trigger on this model when it was $180. For $135, it's a no-brainer. It'll be here in a couple days.

You put the carbon pellet all the way behind hepa, so carbon pellet is the last one before fan? Does thst not create a gap? I have a bunch of fabric filters from last costco winix purchase but I was thinking of getting 5520 because it comes with pellet. I get a lot of cat hair etc but that's usually caught before it gets to hepatitis. My complain is the lack of smell reduction from any of these air purifiers. Feels like I dont get truly fresh no-smell air, cat poop (when I'm not home and they use the litter box) or cooking odors. Only so far coway 400 is making a bit of a difference at high speed when running close to kitchen while cooking but I bet that eats through filter fast.

I quit buying Winix products. Just about every air filter we bought (6 or so) developed really bad bearing noise right after the warranty was up. Thankfully between Costo returns and credit card extended warranty we were made whole. I highly recommend purchasing with a credit card that extends the warranty a year or two.
The older Winix 5500 and 5300 series were built well and didn't have the bearing issues, at least not for the +7 years I've had one. The C535 and C545 both are prone to bearing failures and the generation I'd likely skip.

I now have two of the C909 from Costco and they've been great for the past year, and definitely better filter wise than the round C610 model. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Winix, given this is more like the original 5500 series minus the remote.

Mine developed bearing noise after about 5 years. While the replacement of the bearings isn't incredibly easy, it is definitely doable. The two Winix units I have use standard skateboard bearings so finding replacements was very cheap and easy.
I got halfway through the replacement and couldn't get the bearing off and ended up throwing the whole thing away. Frown

I don't understand the difference between a $75 and $200 filter if you're looking strictly at the filters At the end of the day, its a fan that blows air through these different layers. Are people really justifying paying hundreds extra for wifi and other technologies that have no impact on the filter's main job, to filter the air?

I have 3 Winix's, the oldest running 10hrs/ day for the last 6+ years. Zero issue with all.
Yes, older models are very reliable, but reviews for their newer models including this one are not as good. Not a huge sample set of data yet but it does seem like these newer models are somewhat less reliable than their older models from 2yrs ago or more. ProjectFarm rated this one as the best model of any current brand model he tested which I think is very accurate, but even so, it seems like the older Winix model (model 2200 I think) was a little better/reliable than this new one that replaced it.

Firstly, all air filters are not designed equally. Some are not true HEPA, the more expensive usually are. Secondly, some claimed true HEPA but were caught lying like Levoit.

Winix have a known issue with the noise, it's well documented. Just because your particular units work fine doesn't invalidate the concern or criticism.

I can only comment from my experience. I have two of there products and never had this issue. So I didn't know that it is a known issue. has the company addressed it?
