These rollerblade style office chair casters are praised for smoother, quieter rolling than stock plastic wheels, with easy swivel and strong performance on hardwood, concrete, vinyl, and low cut carpet. They fit chairs like Herman Miller Aeron, Steelcase Leap, HON, and other standard 11 millimeter stems, and they can add a bit of seat height. The main cautions are that they can roll very fast on hard floors, may be awkward to turn on some surfaces, and a few sets have had bearings fall out and leak grease or oil. A solid upgrade if your flooring and chair fit are compatible.

  • home office owners using low-cut commercial carpet (and Herman Miller conference room chairs) because the wheels work fine there as long as you don't have high-nap carpet, and they roll/smoothly compared to stock hard dual wheels.

  • people replacing stock casters on a Herman Miller Aeron or similar office chair for quieter, smoother rolling on hardwood because commenters report they're significantly quieter and glide very smoothly on hardwood floors.

  • Steelcase Leap v2 owners who use tempered glass chair mats because single-wheel rollerblade casters can hesitate to change direction on those mats, while dual-wheel versions fix that frustration and enable smoother direction changes.

  • office chair users on real hardwood who want to avoid floor scuffing because one commenter uses similar wheels directly on real hardwood floors and says they don't scuff or damage the floor.

  • people with thick carpeting in a home office who are willing to add a protective layer because one commenter suggests installing the wheels and placing plexiglass under the chair so the chair doesn't sink into the carpet.

  • buyers who are worried about bearing failures or floor mess because multiple commenters report bearings randomly falling out or leaking out of wheels (including cases where bearings showed up on the floor and one where oil reportedly stained the floor).

  • people using low-pile rugs or carpet who need casters that don't slide around easily because commenters say these can scoot pretty fast on concrete/vinyl hard surfaces and that the casters lack a lock function, which is inconvenient on low-pile carpet or rugs.

  • owners of older executive chairs with ball-type wheels who aren't sure about stem compatibility because ball-type wheels may use a pressure-fit stem size that isn't guaranteed to match-one commenter advises measuring the stem (11mm/7/16" is standard) before assuming these will fit.

  • buyers hoping this is the best price on Amazon because commenters found similar/identical products with nearly identical reviews for as low as ~$12.49, suggesting $13.40 may not be a strong deal.

  • home office users with dense low-pile, high-density nylon rugs who expect a big upgrade because one commenter says the wheels didn't make a huge difference on their dense rug and they ended up swapping back to the original wheels.

I've owned multiple pairs of these, and these wheels can have difficulty changing direction due to the inherent friction from all the weight being placed on a single piece of rubber contacting the floor.

Instead, I highly recommend taking a look at the versions that have dual independently spinning wheels per wheel. You still get all the benefits of these rollerblade wheels plus they change direction without issue.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LH5HK - slightly smaller wheel size (I needed a piston shim for my Steelcase Leap V2)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DVH7YKBV - larger wheel size
I've never sat in any chair that had dual-wheels that moved as smooth as the chairs I've sat in with the single roller-blade style wheel like this. Not saying these are the best quality, just that even the cheapest ones like this have been amazing compared to any dual-wheel chairs I've had.

That's not how friction works. friction force is independent of the contact surface area. While a larger area provides more space for friction-generating interactions, it also reduces the pressure (force per unit area) proportionally. These effects cancel each other out.

Ease of rotation isn't based on friction it's based on the point of rotation off-center from the very top-center of the wheels.

None of what you said makes sense in terms of physics or in terms of real world use (Unless you're pushing through dirt or grass, and the wheel is sinking into the ground.)

Sounds like you're talking about the plastic dual wheel castors that come stock with nearly all office chairs. The ones I linked are the best of both worlds: silk smooth rolling thanks to using rubber rollerblade style wheels, yet easier to turn due to having two independent wheels per chair spoke instead of one.

Ever hear a car's front tires sort of scrubbing/grinding on the pavement as the driver turns the wheel without moving? However you want to describe it, that's what I was trying to convey. I have tempered glass chair mats for two steelcase leap v2 chairs, and began to notice that sometimes my single-wheel rollerblade wheels were often reluctant to change direction. A dual wheel castor works like a differential where the pivot point is between two independent wheels instead of a single wheel castor that must pivot on the face of the wheel itself.
The dual wheel roller blade castors give the same super smooth movement plus change direction without any hesitation, because it works like a car differential. If you don't find this to be an issue with your single-wheel castors, all the power to you, but the dual-wheel castors fixed a very common frustration I was having with mine.

I got two sets of UNIQ from Amazon UNIQ Store. I absolutely love the roller blade style - They Are QUIET (10% of the noise - Seriously) - Smooth rolling - Rotate quickly - Don't seem to ever get stuck. The standard plastic twin wheeled casters are Loud in comparison and rotation can get stuck. These are a HUGE Improvement!! - Cant tell you about this brand but they look similar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076CRCKNT

A differential is only needed when two points of friction/contact are in play with a single fixed axel, our wheels are free spinning. Your analogy in a rack and pinon steering column and tires grinding is also not a valid analogy either as that mechanical system is not in play anywhere in this scenario.

I'm sitting in my leap v2 chair with rollerblade wheels on hard wood floor and it changes direction effortlessly, so our anecdotal instances cancel each other out I guess.

I think what you're really describing is your plastic wheels have half the force friction on each wheel so their surface may have poor frictional attachment to your tempered glass surface. Of course , logically, this chair would change directions quite easily as the wheels rotating around their offcenter pivot point is then paired with some wheels slipping and across the glass instead of rolling in steady contact.

I'm a mechanical engineer, but maybe you are too, so we'll have to agree to disagree.

Wish I could put these in my office chair. But I have old school executive chairs with those ball type wheels which are awful. But not sure if they can be replaced with something like this.

I was about to bite on these but decided to search Amazon for "Office Chair Wheels" and found so many for this price or even less that I really don't think this is a deal. I've found them for as low as $12.49 with nearly identical reviews. I would say these are a deal at <$10, but at this price you are paying full retail price (or even more) for them.

Ball type wheels generally use the same pressure fit stem mechanism that all other office chairs use, but they may not be the same size. You can pull one of the wheels off the chair by pulling it firmly straight out of its socket (can wiggle it a bit side to side if you need to to get it moving, but it should come out relatively easily). You'll then need to measure the diameter of the metal stem that goes into the chair. 11mm or 7/16" is what a standard office char (and these wheels) use. Anything smaller or bigger and you can't use these. I did some googling and found one example of ball wheels that were 7/16" as well as another example that was not, so the only way to know for sure is to pull one out and measure it.
