Even if you're in the Ryobi ecosystem it's hard to justify this price when deals for 6" generic chainsaws with two batteries and some accessories keep showing up for $20. For less than the Ryobi you can get 4 chainsaws, with 8 batteries and some other junk.

I bought a different Ryobi chainsaw years ago for $99 with two 4Ah batteries and ended up returning it because I didn't think it was worth it. Last year I got one of the cheap $20 chainsaws and am happy with it.

A reciprocating saw with a pruning blade can pretty much do whatever these can but these little chainsaws can do it much faster and easier.

I own both this and the one handed reciprocating saw with blade. This is faster, but doesnt cut around dirt; otherwise you will dull the chain really fast. And I would not trust my appendages to no-name junk for $20. Also not having to lubricate it makes it so much more convenient. I use mine all the time. For example, pruning the ends of Christmas trees, knocking down branches to fit into the trash bin.

Sure, but I got those "$20" prunera for free to evaluate. They are garbage. Batteries don't last long, the motor starts to smell burnt after a few cuts and over heats. Sure they are good for about 10 cuts i.e. small job. And the 2 batteries they come with ... dead after 50 or so cuts and needs to be recharged.

But this ryobi kicks *ss. I can cut all day and the motor is still cool as a cucumber. No burnt smells, nothing.

I took down a large grape vine with this pruner. Even when the blades needed sharpening, this pruner kept going. Would have been faster if I had a freshly sharp chain but I didn't, but ryobi held up. Used a 6ah battery no issue.
Those $20 pruners with a bad chain will give up on you and burn through those cheap batteries it came with in 10 minutes flat.

Conclusion, yes it is worth the money if you do quite I bit of pruning. Is $89 a deal? No so much when I got this for $99 a few years ago.

Well said, my thoughts exactly. I wish Ryobi made a chaper version so that the batteries were compatible. But, for $20 those 'toys' come with two batteries like you said; mine even came with a cheap carrying case to put everything inside nice 'n tidy.
I tried a (Ryobi) reciprocating saw on tree branches, but that $20 'toy' made the job so much faster!

I looked at these, then just got an elongated carbide teeth pruning blade and was very happy to use my reciprocating saw. I also bought the 18v brushless ryobi pole saw open box off FBM for like 120 and dayum that thing can cut for days!

Brushless all the way, the performance and battery life is night and day for any tool that operates continously like a chainsaw

You will want to manually oil the chain. I apply a bit before and after I use it. Easy with a pump oil dispenser.

I have the 8" version and it's a workhorse. I've taken thick branches off my trees and it does a great job with it.

My arm muscles went to crap for a few years and I had some branches to cut. My Ryobi 8" brushless chainsaw was way easier than a reciprocating saw: I could just lean the branch against something and the chain pulls it in instead of having to hold it while it pushes back and forth. It was definitely worth it for me. I don't know how much weaker this 6" brushed version is.

It's not, you have to add chainsaw oil manually, I do it with a squeeze bottle every x number of cuts

I have one of those cheap Chinese ones. came in neat box, and 2 batteries...
one battery died after a year. the other takes about 10-20 cuts until it dies. I would be a little afraid these chinese batteries will catch on fire hehe.
I already in Ryobi (and Makita via old Makita battery + battery-adapter to Ryobi products) ecosystem, so I'd like to get one of these at some point (without a battery) and use the batteries i have the most of.

Any opins on 6" vs 8", think Ryobi has 2 or 3 different mini-chain models

I have an older version of this Ryobi mini chainsaw and also have a Ryobi reciprocating saw. I regularly prune and cut branches in my yard. Each tool has its own benefits.

The mini chainsaw is better for thicker branches. I have cut a number of fallen tree limbs from storms and also pruned dead ones that needed to be removed. I typically cut wood to size so they can either be collected by my town or down to size to use in a fire pit / fire place. I would definitely not risk using a cheap chainsaw to do this — the moving blade alone without the appropriate guard could really injure you.

A reciprocating saw with a good 5" or larger "pruning blade" is better for cutting branches up to 2-3" inches in diameter. Sure, you can definitely cut bigger ones, but the mini chainsaw's blade is much more efficient at removing the wood more quickly.

I prefer to use the chainsaw at chest height or lower. While the recip saw I have used above my head.

Either tool requires thoughtful use to avoid getting hurt. Both Ryobi tools have seen a lot of use and are both brushed. I have no issues cutting with 4ah batteries - they last quite a while on these tools.
