Are you specifically looking at 64GB + 2TB models? ...because that's the most important part to scope results to.
I don't know about the 2TB storage, but 64GB with 1TB storage have been posted here in the past multiple times for $1100-$1200. Most of them having posted by me.

Macbook Air 15 is 1199 student discount from apple. Is it worth 200 bucks to move up to this pro?
yeah I made the same decision for my brother lol. Was originally gonna get him the Air, but he wanted screen size upgrade (fair) and storage bump. After that it was only like $200 extra for the pro.
You get a significantly better display, better speakers. That alone is probably worth the difference. But also better battery, fan (better thermals but potentially some noise from the fan)

Sad that Apple has these very poor names for their Mac's. This is a MacBook Pro without a pro chip. Imagine that……….i wonder how many suckers they have suckered …..

Depends on how much you're willing to spend. An M3 pro would be the best choice and overall better bang for buck. It's much cheaper than the M4 Pro and M5 Pro, without being noticeably behind. If you don't mind refurbs, you can easily find some in excellent condition for $950-$1100.
M3 pro is significantly behind m4 pro. Unlike say m3 max vs m4 max

I think I clearly mentioned 'budget' and 'best bang for your buck' in the comment, before mentioning not being significantly behind. A new M3 Pro can be gotten for around $1349, less if on sale, and even lesser for a refurb. M4 Pro is $1699 at MC only, and more than that everywhere else. There's also a refurb 16" M3 Pro with 36GB RAM that keeps popping up on Woot! for $1499, and that would be the best pick for balanced specs.

You seem to know a great deal. So your ultimate advice would be keep an M1 Pro 16 if it's just going to be used for office work, watching media, remoting in to other computers occasionally?
Ya good for another 6 years.

Here's hoping you're correct. From a performance standpoint I'd say you are, but from a major update standpoint, maybe not.
I'm concerned Apple might eventually drop support for old hardware to push people toward newer models. I hope this isn't the case, since even the 'old' base M1 has significant performance headroom for your average PC user who's not doing 'bleeding edge' stuff. There haven't been significant hardware revisions year-over-year either that would complicate support & help them 'justify' dropping it.. but I guess only time will tell.

I got the 24gb + 1tb for 1599 from BB price match with micro center. What protection package did y'all get? I'm considering Allstate one from Costco. It's $99 vs $279 for apple care. Has anyone used Allsate?

does the BB price match work if you dont have a microcenter near you?

Uh, what do you even use the machine for? Odds are you're not likely gaining anything but a marginal upgrade if you're just using it for typical computer stuff like Web browsing and media consumption, school and office work, light creative work, communication and coding. Sure you get Bluetooth 6 Wifi 7 and Thunderbolt 5 which almost nobody is going to notice a perceptible difference. It's the same chassis and display; only difference is the chip. The brightness is software controlled and Apple increased the nits in the iterations of the various models. You can change the nits on an older model using third party tools: https://www.getvivid.app The only thing they changed on the display panel itself is they upgraded from a red KSF phosphor film to a cadmium-free quantum dot film and I literally can't tell any difference; seems negligible to me.
...
FWIW, the posting is for the base M5 chip MBP. It only has WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Thunderbolt 4. So even less of an upgrade from the M1 Max laptop that was asked about (though, as pointed out, it's not clear if these are important/significant upgrades for most folks).

From what I've read, it does not work. I guess you could still give it a shot...

I think it depends on the agent you get. I was able to get BB to price match on MC's $450 M4 Mac Mini deal a while back, despite the closest MC being ~2.5 hours away.. and I didn't have to re-try with another agent.
I'd say if one says no, maybe disconnect and try again later Smilie

Same price at Costco. Usually there is also about $50 discount on AppleCare at Costco.

Is this MacBook Pro M5 good for gaming?
Or it's better to get a Windows gaming laptop similar price points?
