Not a good deal unless it drops $200 more. M5 gives you a 512 SSD that is 3-4 times faster which is important for swap especially with the base 16 RAM. Other additions such as WiFi 7 and AI acceleration might be important to those who keep their Mac's for 4+ years.

Those who don't need this urgently, and Apple refurbished is OK, Apple sold a similar model for $849.
It is currently out of stock but will be back in stock from time to time.

Again, OP is new, my comment is about Apple Refurbished.

This MacBook Air deal stands out for the 13 inch M4 with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, and the display and speakers are praised as excellent. Apple refurbished and open box alternatives come up repeatedly as cheaper ways to get the same class of machine, with Apple refurb described as arriving like new and carrying standard warranty coverage. The main knock is price, since similar or newer M5 configurations are only about $50 to $100 more, and prior refurb, Costco, and holiday prices were lower. It looks strongest if you want this exact spec now rather than waiting for a better discount.

Common Questions (4)

  • The M5 13-inch 16GB/512GB has been listed for only $50 to $40 more at $999 or $989, and it adds faster 512GB storage plus Wi‑Fi 7 and stronger AI/GPU features. For buyers planning to keep the laptop 4+ years, that upgrade can be worth the small price gap.

  • It is often beaten by other options: Apple Refurbished has been seen at $849 for a similar M4 13-inch model, and Costco has had the same 16GB/512GB configuration for $849 as well. If you can wait or find those listings in stock, they are cheaper than this $949 price.

  • Apple Refurb units come in a sealed white refurb box, include Apple's standard warranty, and can take AppleCare. They are described as hard to distinguish from new, making refurb a strong option if you do not need the latest model.

  • The 13-inch MacBook Air's screen and speakers are described as great. That makes it a strong everyday laptop for media, school, and general use even if the price is not the lowest available.

I'm in the market for a macbook. I recall seeing a deal for a new M4 Air for $750 a couple months ago. Given the fact that this is last years model, we should be seeing this below that. This years price hike on the M5 Air seems to have lessened the deprecation we'd see for previous year models.
The M5 had more of the improvements on the Ai/GPU side. Each GPU has its own AI accelerator now, if that is useful to you.

Apple refurb is basically brand new. I've bought phones, iPads, MB. They come as if it was new. Last time was 2019 so could be different now but apple refurbished direct is an excellent option if you don't want the newest model.
Yep, same here. Some people don't like it, so I noted it in the comment.

I bought a refurb M4 with those specs for $745 but all these reviewers praising the Neo, should I wait for a refurb Neo instead? I already have a gaming PC so do you think refurb Neo (512gb) will go down to $400-450? I feel like that be a better deal for my use case.

idk they just released it so it might take a little while before dropping. Still 512 GB with 8 gb of RAM vs M4 at 16 GB for 745, I would say M4 is a better deal. Depends on how much you wanna wait.

Apple Refurb is the way to go. Comes in a nice white sealed refurb box that would be hard to tell it's not new (small refurbished printed on it) Apple standard warranty and you can add apple care. Ours was perfect. Saved some good $$$
