Not a good deal unless it drops $200 more. M5 gives you a 512 SSD that is 3-4 times faster which is important for swap especially with the base 16 RAM. Other additions such as WiFi 7 and AI acceleration might be important to those who keep their Mac's for 4+ years.
Those who don't need this urgently, and Apple refurbished is OK, Apple sold a similar model for $849.

And when that happens you will say "wait for the m6 to reach this price".
I think his/her point is that full retail price of a similar configuration with M5 is only 1099, so 949 would be a normal sale price for it soon. Many retailers were selling it at $50 discount in the first week itself.
It does look like a good deal with its original 1199 price, but his/her point is valid that its msrp at this time should be less than 1099 (because of older processor).

This is same as holiday season prices from last year. EDU for M5 is better at $50 more.
I bought this M4 from BB last year at the same price with a 40mm Watch SE 3 and PayPal promo $250 off $1250. Both combined came out right around that price, so $1K spend for both. Unless you've such promo to stack, recommend to wait.

Apple refurb is basically brand new. I've bought phones, iPads, MB. They come as if it was new. Last time was 2019 so could be different now but apple refurbished direct is an excellent option if you don't want the newest model.

But the M5 version with 24 GB ram and 512 GB storage has a 15" screen and Amazon's M4 version is $1299. So just $100 different
I'm in the market for a macbook. I recall seeing a deal for a new M4 Air for $750 a couple months ago. Given the fact that this is last years model, we should be seeing this below that. This years price hike on the M5 Air seems to have lessened the deprecation we'd see for previous year models.

Any idea how often they come in stock as a refurb? Been looking for a few weeks and either i miss them or just stays OOS
