This Scotts crabgrass preventer is valued for early-season pre emergent control and lawn feeding in one bag, with roughly three months of prevention and coverage up to 5,000 square feet per bag. It is also described as useful on lawns and some landscaped areas, though timing matters because warm weather or soil above 60 degrees can make application too late. The main cautions are that it can kill new fall overseeding and that weed and feed formulas are viewed as less effective than separate products. The deal is seen as strong on price versus recent alternatives.

Common Questions (5)

  • Apply it before crabgrass germinates, ideally when soil temperatures are still below 60°F. If a heatwave has already pushed conditions warm, it may be too late; in North Carolina, one timing rule mentioned is to have it down by Valentine's Day unless unusually warm weather arrives early.

  • It can be used in landscaped areas with grass and weeds, but multiple applications may be needed. For bare soil, prodiamine is suggested instead, while existing weeds may need spot treatment or a blanket spray such as Roundup.

  • Yes. It can kill new growth if you overseed in the fall, so it should not be used where new grass seed is trying to establish. Scotts does make a pre-emergent that is compatible with new growth, but that version only lasts about 6 weeks instead of roughly 3 months.

  • No. It primarily targets crabgrass and some other grassy weeds, but it does not feed the lawn, so it is not a true weed-and-feed product. Separate weed control and fertilizer products are the better approach if you want both jobs done well.

  • It is described as providing about 3 months of prevention. A Scotts pre-emergent that is safe for new growth is mentioned as lasting only about 6 weeks, which is the tradeoff for overseeding compatibility.

Its much better than this scotts crap. Buy your self a small scale so you can weigh the amount. That's the tricky part. Mix in a bucket well before putting into the sprayer.

Pro tip. Apply at 1/2 the rate about a month apart... that's called split apps for all season coverage
Does it prevent weeds and feed also? Or primarily weed prevention?

This primarily targets crabgrass but does help with some other grassy weeds. It does not feed. Weed in feeds are basically garbage, don't use them.
Much like stain and polyurathane in one, it'll work but not as good as 2 different products.

Thanks ... what do you recommend for landscaped areas (shrubs/bushes). I get some grass in there, but its all sort of other non-sense weeds that I'd like to prevent. Typically, I do a Preen treatment. but it never seems to last long enough.

You can use this in those areas too. You may need to apply a couple times. I have some bare soil areas that I'll use prodiamine on. I well probably have to spot treat weeds or blanket with roundup.

It works great on grass/lawns for crabgrass though

Not really 53 bucks for original price. The one pack regular price is 19 and change so two pack would be under 40 so it's a slight deal.
Inaccurate prices this 2026 season. The cheapest I have found for one bag is $20+ AND the old 13.35 lb bag appears to have SHRUNK to 12.5 lbs in many adds. Beware the increases ... This WM deal is the best I have seen lately.

Looks they offer the MAX version for $55.99 and 14,000 sq ft near me. My deal is better on price, but the stronger formula may be better for your lawn.

I use a granular product called Snapshot in my landscaped areas (bush/flower beds)
It's similar to Preen, but more effective. Regular Preen is supposed to be applied every 2 months, Snapshot is once a year and says it remains effective for 6-8 months.

How do they not explicitly list the active ingredient(s)?

It's literally the difference between grass live and death.
