Q1 pro is a solid option, but at $100 it's a bit overpriced in my opinion. I've got a decent collection of boards, and for $100 I can get a few options including more custom with different switches and keycaps.

But for a starter, keychron is an easy no brainer option. Plus they are customizable as well. It's just the initial price of $100 vs say $50-60 on a barebones kit.

You could do a lot worse.

Community Reviews

Keychron boards are praised as an easy entry into mechanical keyboards, with solid fit and finish, customizable layouts, and options like full size, 96 percent, and low profile models. The K3 and other slim versions feel closest to a laptop keyboard, while brown switches are favored for a quieter, more natural tactile feel. The main cautions are Bluetooth lag and sleep behavior on some models, limited hot swap or customization on others, and switches or keycaps that can feel cheap at higher prices. A strong value pick if the layout and switch type fit your setup.

These keyboards are an okay introduction to mechanical keyboards and the fit and finish of the case is fantastic, but the switches themselves leave a lot to be desired. Not a huge deal if you're planning on replacing them but I know not everyone is interested in doing that. If you can get a Rainy75 for ~$100-120 it'll smoke these, that's a much better feeling and sounding board

I second this guy. You can get a rainy75 standard version for $85 now. I have used keyboards in the 200-300 range, and love rainy75 so much. If you need numpads get a separate one. You'll thank us later

Careful with the Rainy75 if you're going to swap switches/caps... Seen plenty of reddit threads of the PCB being cheap and switched not sitting the same after swapping or the PCB breaking. Customer service also doesn't seem great with them.

Haha, I also asked Gemini to help me decide! Since I personally need a 96% or full-size layout, I went with the Keychron K4 V3 with Super Brown switches.
I was initially debating between the K10 (essentially the full-size version of K8) and the K4, but I ultimately went with the K4 V3 becuase I prioritize the shine-through keycaps and QMK compatibility. I definitely echo on the Brown switch decision as it seems to be the Reddit favorite. Having always used linear switches myself, this will be my first time trying tactile, so I'm honestly not sure what to expect : P

first time hearing about this brand (Rainy) but I definitely enjoy their eathetics. Wish they carry a 96% or fullsize layout as I prefer a numpad.

Agreed! Q5 is deeply discounted at keychron.com, but pretty much sold out in every color except navy blue (not a fan of that color). Looks like they are trying to gradually discontinue Q5.

how do you like your brown switches? I got the 96% layout with brown switches and I hope I will like them. Right now, I'm on Nuphy's quiet linear switches so I want to try something different.

just an FYI, I hate my Keychron keyboard when it's in bluetooth mode. Goes to sleep within 5 minutes of inactivity, takes 20+seconds to wake up, battery can't make it past more than a couple days. I end up using it attached with a cable at all times.
You can adjust the sleep mode settings.

Slim keyboards are awful if you're typing a lot or using them for work. You'll spend more time correcting. IMO, slim keyboards are for aesthetics.
Funny, I have been using slim Keychron's for years for work and vastly prefer them to full size.

Same here, been using slim profile Keychron's for years everywhere, work and home and I simply cannot go back to full sized keys.

The people wondering why Keychron's are so popular are because they were the only game in time for affordable prices and did everything well enough and offered tons of features and layouts a few years ago.

Now there are tons of options at that price point.

They still make amazing keyboards.
