Proprietary filters, $3/change, so this is the "inkjet printer" sales model. BUT if you have good water or filter the water before filling this, you can probably get away with just using filter foam to strain stuff from the water. I've done that with most of my fountains, it's cheaper and you can rinse it out with VERY hot water each cleaning cycle and reuse it multiple times.
