The Alpine UTE 73BT is a straightforward single DIN receiver that fits older vehicles and simple swap outs, with solid sound and 5 volt preouts for cleaner aftermarket setups. It has been described as pretty solid in a 2010 Explorer and as a radio that just works, with years of trouble free use in one vehicle. The main concern is Bluetooth reliability, and the feature set is basic, with no touchscreen, Android Auto, or navigation screen. At around $68, it is a practical pick if you want a no frills head unit and can live with the limitations.

  • Older-vehicle owners who want a non-touchscreen head unit because it can be used as a receiver in much older vehicles and paired with an iPad in front.

  • DIY installers swapping out factory head units in older trucks because commenters say it's "pretty solid" when replacing factory units and they like the easy upgrade path.

  • People planning a custom audio build who are okay doing extra integration work because modern installs may require reading schematics/harnesses and adding a lineout converter or DSP before an amp.

  • Buyers shopping around at about $68 who can tolerate Bluetooth risk because one commenter says unreliable Bluetooth is the biggest complaint but frames it as a risk worth taking at this price.

  • Drivers who want simple phone audio without reselecting inputs every time because one user uses an FM broadcaster setup and notes the practical benefit of not having to reselect the input when the car restarts compared with Bluetooth factory radios.

  • People who want to confirm compatibility and wiring before buying because commenters recommend using Crutchfield to check whether the car needs a computer and to get the correct harness plus teardown instructions and phone support.

  • Shoppers who specifically want Android Auto/navigation screen features because a commenter argues that buying a head unit without Android Auto (and a navigation screen) is a mistake and notes regret with a previous high-end Alpine single deck.

  • Anyone who's worried about theft risk from exposed car audio because commenters warn that thieves steal even units with faceplate removal and also take the bracket and harness.

You'll have to pry my combo CD/tape deck from my old truck out of my cold dead hands. I just removed the whip antenna and use an FM broadcaster to give it cell media. Works surprisingly well, especially considering I've been using the same no name Amazon one since about 2020. Added benefit to me is when you turn off the car to run into a store you don't have to reselect the input like I've had to do with every Bluetooth compatible factory radio I've had since 😂
Love FM broadcasters: SQ ain't great, but it's reliable! Just be careful you don't get in trouble with the FCC. Those FM broadcasters are often more powerful and advertised.

I may be strange, but it's got to have HD Radio if I'm going through the trouble of swapping head units. Most of those extra channels are commercial-free, and some include my AM news/talk stations.

I really miss the days when it was easy to swap out crappy factory head units for awesome radios with 5 volt preouts. I actually have this Alpine head unit in my 2010 hunt camp Explorer and it's pretty solid.
I remember mounting a FM converter to my 1972 Plymouth, then upgrading the OEM radio to awesome 8-track deck.

I don't understand... why buy a car headunit if it did not have Android Auto... a screen for navigation, etc...

Many single din decks have the ability to pull out a screen and have Android Auto. I think anyone who buys this is making a mistake.

P.S.
I have after market radios in all my cars for over 20 years and 20 years ago I did have a high end Alpine single deck... and... I regretted it.

Here is an example of what I am talking about...

Thieves will steal this? and put it in what, their carbureted muscle car from the 70's. those car guys have enough $$ for a hi-end system and a real car alarm/ security system "protected by Smith and Wesson"
