GEARWRENCH's pass through ratchet and socket set is a specialized low profile kit that shines in tight spots, long bolts, and other awkward jobs where a standard ratchet and socket setup is too bulky. The shallow design gives more contact area than a ratcheting wrench, and the sockets lock in firmly with a circular retention ring spring. The main drawback is convenience, since storage case support and replacement pieces are limited, and the set needs a pass through extension for full use. A compact, niche tool for jobs where clearance matters.
Common Questions (6)
Yes. The pass-through design is shallower than a traditional ratchet-and-socket setup, which helps in tight-clearance areas and on nuts on long bolts or all-thread. It also gives more contact area than a ratcheting wrench.
A case is not clearly included, and storage is a common concern with this style of set. The set would be much more convenient with a case, otherwise keeping the pieces organized can be an issue.
Replacement availability is limited and depends on the brand and finish. Some pass-through sockets are sold individually through third-party sources, but Gearwrench does not appear to sell individual sockets directly, so mixing and matching may be the practical workaround.
Yes. The pass-through setup requires a pass-through extension to use, and similar sets that include a short extension can be more flexible for certain jobs.
It is more specialized than a standard ratchet-and-socket kit. The low-profile pass-through design can be more versatile in cramped spots, but it is not a direct replacement for a conventional set.
Yes. Those pass-through lines are described as interchangeable with the GEARWRENCH style, and the spline-drive design is shared across several compatible brands.

Both Gearwrench and Crescent x6 (which is indeed the same spline drive) do list these pass-through's as a current product on their web sites HOWEVER even gearwrench who appears to be the "lead" producer doesn't sell any individual sockets.
otherwise, a good quality set for a basic tool kit.
it's worth noting that the HF (pittsburgh) set uses hex-drive, and is cheaper than this with lifetime warranty. I don't know how HF handles warranty exchange for pittsburgh branded stuff, but they are (I hear) great for icon and doyle)

There still are even some individual sockets of common sizes on Sears.com for the Craftsman:

And hundreds of carded individual sizes on ebay.
So personally I'm not too worried that I can get a replacement socket for any brand, but you can always mix and match if you are not too anal about your set matching...
