not sure about the deal itself, i think i got mine scratch and dent for significantly cheaper, but if anyone has a vertical smoker that will work with this, its an absolute must buy. works so much better than their built in nonsense. you can load this up and it will provide smoke for 5 hours or more, rather than constantly refilling the puny tray they provide. you can also smoke at much lower temps, and your smoke production is independent of the smoker temps.
another thing to add.... these are often shown as not compatible with some of their models. sometimes thats because the air inlet on the side of the machine is a different size, in which case you can build an adapter, or sometimes it is simply too high or too low, in which case you just have to build up a base for either the smoker or this attachment.
The Masterbuilt slow and cold smoker attachment turns a compatible vertical smoker into a much better smoke source than the built in chip tray, with long smoke runs, lower temperature smoking, and smoke output that stays separate from the smoker heat. It also works well for cold smoking jerky and finishing it in a dehydrator, and the attachment itself is described as easy to use once fitted. The main catch is compatibility, since some 30 inch and 40 inch models need a raised base, longer feet, or an adapter to line up the inlet. For the right smoker, it adds a useful feature that feels like it should have been built in.
40" Masterbuilt vertical smoker owners who want an easy add-on because installation is no-mod/no-tools required on the 40" model, and one user paid extra for the feature and doesn't regret it.
DIY tinkerers with a compatible smoker who can handle fitment tweaks because some models are incompatible due to air inlet size/height, but commenters say you can build an adapter or base to make it work.
Owners of a compatible vertical Masterbuilt smoker because this attachment can provide smoke for 5+ hours without constantly refilling the built-in chip tray, and it lets you smoke at much lower temps with smoke production that's independent of the smoker's temps.
30" Masterbuilt owners who are willing to raise the smoker (or use a leg kit) for cold smoking because the cold smoker hangs below the adjustable legs, and one owner reports Masterbuilt sent a free leg kit after a design issue and it's held up for a decade.
Home jerky makers who want to cold smoke then finish in a dehydrator because one user cold smokes for about two hours (power/heat off) and then dehydrates, saying the homemade jerky (and dog jerky treats) tastes better than store-bought and is cheaper.
People with a Masterbuilt smoker size/model that's incompatible out of the box because commenters report some 40" models don't fit for various reasons and require creativity like adding longer feet to make it work.
30" Masterbuilt owners who don't want to raise the smoker or add the leg kit because the cold smoker hangs below the adjustable legs, so it won't sit correctly without raising the unit.
Buyers expecting the attachment to be universally compatible with any Masterbuilt vertical smoker because multiple commenters note compatibility issues depending on air inlet size and height, and that sometimes you must build an adapter or base to solve it.
The 40-inch Masterbuilt can be a no-mod, no-tools fit, while many 30-inch setups need the smoker raised because the attachment hangs below the legs. Some incompatible models can be made to work with an adapter, longer feet, or a raised base.
For some 30-inch smokers, yes: the smoker may need to be raised with a leg kit, cinder blocks, or a custom base so the attachment clears the bottom. Some users also add an adapter or longer feet when the inlet height or size does not line up.
It can provide smoke for 5 hours or more from a full load, which reduces constant refilling compared with the built-in chip tray. It also lets you smoke at much lower temperatures because smoke production is independent of the smoker's heat.
Yes. It can cold smoke meat for about two hours before finishing in a dehydrator, and it is also used for homemade jerky and dog jerky treats. The setup is valued because it adds smoke flavor without needing the smoker's heat on.

This was only $54 last year on Amazon. Not exactly FP, but decent price.
This unit was discontinued for a while, then was reintroduced last year. A lot of websites still had listings for these, even though everyone had them listed as out of stock. I wonder if the $54 price was from before Masterbuilt reintroduced them. If any were actually sold at that price, it would have been one heck of a deal.

You are correct. My bad, I meant this $54 price was between July 2024 and Dec 2024, then discontinued last year. Hopefully it drops a bit. Decent price tho. Still on fence, but might still wait.

Whatever you decide, let the blue smoke roll, my friend!
I have the 40" Masterbuilt, and frankly, they should built-in standard with their smokers. I sent them an email suggesting that. I'm pretty sure people would pay a little more to have that feature included. I paid $90 more mine and don't regret it at all.
I make homemade jerky using this. I cold smoke (power/heat off in the smoker) for two hours and then put everything in a dehydrator. It's an extra step that I do skip sometimes, as you can do it all in your smoker including dehydrate, but I think the actual dehydrator does a much better job of finishing the jerky. What I make at home is so much better than store jerky. It's very easy to make too.
I also make jerky treats for our dog, no smoke, seasoning, or salt, just dried meat. Now our dog doesn't want anything else. If it's meat and tastes good to humans the dog will love it. It's way cheaper than commercial dog treats, and healthier since nothing's added. In fact, that's how I discovered making homemade jerky for "me". The first batch I made for the dog was like a light going on, amazing. It was just bottom round roast I sliced up, but man, pure beef flavor. I've switched to using pork loin (for both of us) since it's 1/3 the price of beef and she loves it just as much. Nothing beats beef, but lean pork loin is a good substitute and works great for jerky.

It's no mod, no tools required with the 40" Masterbuilt. You would probably need a base with the 30".

You're right. The 30" needs the smoker to be raised since the cold smoker hangs below where the little adjustable legs that come with the smoker will raise it. 10 years ago, I called Masterbuilt to report the design problem with the cold smoker being lower than the bottom of the actual smoker and they sent me a free leg kit. I doubt that they would still do that, so YMMV. Frankly, cinder blocks would work just as well to raise the smoker unless you need the wheels on the back legs to move the smoker around. The leg kit is durable. I've been transferring it from 30" smoker to 30" smoker, just like I do with the cold smoker attachment. 10 years later, the legs, which have been exposed to the elements for a decade, are still in great shape. The kit might be worth the investment to some.

Never knew there was a leg kit! I put mine on cinder blocks immediately after assembling for 3 reasons. 1) because it's so damn low 2) to balance it 3) to prevent rusting. 8 years later and the only thing that has rusted is the metal around the burner. I rest a 6" cast iron pan on it with my wood chunks, so I'm sure that didn't help. Gotta address that this year. Thanks for the legs info though!

maybe the current models, but there are quite a few 40" models that are incompatible for all sorts of reasons. i made mine work with some creativity. my smoker was actually too tall. wasnt to hard to add longer feet to the attachment.

Why would you need longer feet for the attachment? The smoke tube that is attached to the cold smoker and is inserted into the hole in the side of the smoker is sturdy enough to support the weight of the cold smoker attachment. I've been hanging the cold smoker off of the side of my 30" with leg kit for 10 years.

The attachment can provide several hours of smoke without constantly refilling the built-in chip tray.
The attachment can enable lower smoking temperatures while keeping smoke production independent of smoker temperature.
The 40-inch setup can install without tools or modifications, which simplifies getting started.
The cold-smoking workflow can produce jerky that tastes better than store-bought options for homemade batches.
The 30-inch configuration may require raising the smoker because the cold smoker hangs below the adjustable legs.
Compatibility can fail on some vertical smoker models due to air inlet size or inlet height differences.
Rust can develop around the burner area over time, especially when using a cast iron pan on the attachment.
Some 40-inch models may be incompatible for reasons that require creative adjustments like adding longer feet.
