I feel your pain man. I'm a lefty, but I learned guitar righty. Now I'm about to start up drums and don't know if I should do the same (high hat left? ride right?). lol. At least with drums you can change the set up if you later change your mind.
I would recommend going to a guitar shop near you and playing around with some guitars and just see what you like, you can get a decent beginner electric guitar for under 300 bucks. Epiphone, Squier, LTD, etc...
And try your best to not just jump in and start playing nothing but power chords. Start from the basics and eventually work power chords in (or just get a teacher), I've known so so many people that are into metal start out with just playing power chords and never progress past that.
