Rao's marinara is praised as a standout jarred sauce, with a rich, familiar flavor that beats Ragu, Prego, and most store brands, and it has even been called the best all around marinara. The 24 ounce jar at $5.30 with Subscribe and Save is viewed as a decent price, though the 32 ounce size and Costco pricing look better per ounce. The main caution is shipping, since broken seals, leaking jars, and messy deliveries keep showing up. A dependable pantry pick if it arrives intact.

  • S&S pricing can drop to about $4.74, which improves the value versus the $5.30 shown initially.

  • Rao's marinara can deliver a noticeably better taste than Ragu, Prego, and store brands for family meals.

  • Rao's mushroom and sausage sauce works well as a base when layered with cooked Italian sausage and baked mozzarella.

  • The 32 oz jar size can offer a better deal than the 24 oz jar for shoppers comparing unit value.

  • Amazon shipping can lead to leaking jars and a sauce mess when jars are packed with minimal protection.

  • Rao's can be more expensive than alternatives like Aldi Specially Selected or Trader Joe's sauces for similar marinara use.

  • Rao's jars can arrive with broken vacuum seals, which creates a quality and freshness concern.

  • S&S deliveries can still arrive with broken glass and leaking packaging, even when the Rao's jars themselves remain intact.

chain of command for Costco vs Amazon here. Costco will always win because they are food providers. You can be buying sauce that sat in the sun before getting moved inside the warehouse. Be careful.

Just had my monthly S&S delivery yesterday that included 2 jars of this. And yup, broken glass and sauce everywhere. Luckily both jars of sauce were in fact still intact because the "sauce" turned out to be salsa. It was my Pace salsa that was smashed. I mostly poopooed the "watch out for the broken jars" thing, but now my cherry's been popped. "Happy" though that it was the salsa instead of the Rao's because that's more of a product I buy that gets me to the 5 items for the 15% S&S discount. Already been credited back.

Buy the Cento San Marzanos 28 oz can for much less and make your own brighter, fresher salsa sauce that a jar (even Raos) can't compete with.
No thanks, Raos is awesome, I will continue to buy Raos.

It's a great deal but Amazon shipping was awful. Both jars were simply packed in a cardboard box with a piece of shipping paper, so of course they both leaked everywhere and made a mess.

Rao's is great, but usually expensive. If you want to try a Marinara that is on the Rao's level, but at $3.89 for 24 oz, kinder on the wallet, try Aldi's Specially Selected Marinara Pasta Sauce. Solid ingredients and very solid taste.
