This TP-Link Deco tri band mesh system is praised for fast whole home Wi Fi, strong 2.5G performance, and easy setup. It can push near gigabit speeds across larger homes, handle many devices, and offers useful extras like an isolated 2.4 GHz IoT network, guest Wi Fi, VPN support, and solid port forwarding and IP reservations. The main caveat is reliability, with reports of satellites dropping offline, firmware frustrations, and some older printers or devices struggling to connect. A capable mesh option if your network gear and device mix fit its strengths.

Common Questions (5)

  • Several users report it being rock solid for months to about a year, including homes with many devices and wired backhaul. Others report satellites going offline, firmware update problems, or units failing after months to a few years, so long-term reliability can be inconsistent.

  • Yes. The Deco app can create a separate 2.4 GHz IoT network for cameras, smart devices, and other low-bandwidth gear, plus a guest Wi‑Fi network. It also supports VPN access through the app and can isolate devices when needed.

  • Older printers and IoT gear may need the Deco's authentication lowered to WPA or WPA2, or a separate 2.4 GHz IoT/guest network. The Deco app can create a 2.4 GHz-only IoT network, which helps devices that cannot see or join the main merged network.

  • With a 2.5G WAN/LAN connection, it can exceed a 1 Gbps plan and reach about 1.2-1.4 Gbps down on over-provisioned fiber. On a 1 Gbps connection, speeds around 920 Mbps were reported, and whole-home Wi‑Fi speeds improved substantially versus older mesh systems.

  • It is most compelling for faster internet plans or if you want 2.5G Ethernet and Wi‑Fi 7 features. If you only have gigabit service, some users feel Wi‑Fi 6 is already enough and the 2.5G ports add little value.

Very very slightly better specs on the Costco model, nothing I would expect anyone to ever notice in the real world. Maybe worth the extra $15 for the better return policy, though.

The important part of that article is: "Nor does it prevent retailers from continuing to sell, import, or market router models approved previously through the FCC's equipment authorization process," the commission adds."
Meaning they can continue to manufacture and sell these as long as they were previously FCC approved for that model. We're seeing this in the drone space as DJI was rushing to get their last batch FCC approved before they clamped down.

I've owned this for just under a year... tons of problems where satellites keep going offline. Support took a long time to fix (still waiting). I'd avoid.

Bought these awhile back. They're awesome. My wifi 7 devices gets really fast download speeds. You can open a separate server for 2.4 ghz for your security cams / tv / smart devices so your main wifi isn't cluttered with devices. You can open a guest wifi. And you can sign into a VPN with your router through the app. There's probably more that I haven't discovered yet.

I'm trying to find a new router and keep going back and forth with the Dream Router 7 and some Asus models. I'm still on the fence.

And what do you expect will happen with the current models when there are no approved "new" models?

Just FYI this is nothing but a big grift on foreign manufacturers. It clearly states any model that does not have FCC certification currently or upcoming products can still be sold as long as they go through the new approval process and pay their fees....

Also this will be impossible to enforce since we have access to China marketplaces like Aliexpress and the likes.
