Review here [notebookcheck.net].

Recommend getting an i7 and 16GB; while memory is upgradeable to 64GB (2 slots), the cost of new memory these days is outrageous.

I have a couple of these refurbs. I found in both cases that the thermal compound on the CPU/GPU is dried and crusty causing the laptops to thermal throttle badly. Its a very easy fix and using PTM7950 dropped the temps from 100c to a max of 65c during cinebench heat runs. After that they are pretty zippy and a great deal on a small form laptop.

Refurbished and a 6 year old processor. $200 is cheap but this thing isn't exactly cutting edge.

This refurbished Latitude 5420 is a compact business laptop that stands out for everyday work, school, and light home lab use. The i7 1185G7 and 16GB RAM configuration is repeatedly framed as the right starting point, and the memory can be expanded to 64GB with two slots. It handles browsing, Excel, Minecraft, and even college workloads well, and Windows 11 support is confirmed. The main cautions are older Intel battery life, warm running, and occasional refurb concerns like worn thermal paste or enterprise locks. A solid small laptop if you can live with an aging platform and keep it plugged in sometimes.

  • The 16GB (2x8GB) configuration can be a practical starting point because memory is upgradeable to 64GB using two slots.

    swechslern0p

  • The Latitude 5420 can support Windows 11, which helps when software like TurboTax requires the newer OS.

    SRL2OliveRoad1710

  • The laptop can run Minecraft smoothly and can handle basic 3D rendering and math teaching tasks.

    ScarletSnow543

  • Replacing dried thermal compound with PTM7950 can reduce thermal throttling and lower peak temperatures during heavy runs.

    MountainGuru

  • The i7-1185G7 generation can feel dated and may not deliver cutting-edge performance for demanding workloads.

    rmsaelephantswechsler

  • Battery life can degrade on older refurbished Dell units, and the battery may need replacement or frequent docking.

    Currentrez

  • Thermal issues can be significant on Latitude 54XX refurbs, including reports of overheating problems in the series.

    Medic311

  • Some devices may arrive with Autopilot or Computrace/Absolute-style enterprise locking or firmware-level persistence, so buyers should check immediately.

Just found out that TurboTax requires Win 11 to run this morning and I need to buy a laptop with Win 11 since my current one with Win 10 is not eligible for upgrade to Win 11. Found this deal and bought one today. Thanks!

Use the web/cloud edition. You can trust it, security wise and it simply requires a browser. Just a strong suggestion.

This laptop is perfectly fine for the way I see 90% of people use their laptops.

Able to buy HP i5 13th gen with 16gb ram for $250 from ebay. Looks new and still have 6 months of warranty left. Screen is not the best but if you looking for a one for school I'll look ebay for better deal.

This is the gen right before Intel got decent battery life. I'd skip unless it's going to be plugged in all the time.

I used the coupon on one of the 7670. Paid $800 for 64GB, i7-12850HX and RTX A2000. I do have some regrets as it's pretty old now, but it will do what I need it to just fine. 30% gain on single core speeds over the newer 7 240h that I was going to buy from another deal.It is going to be my CAD/CAM computer and I'd say it was a pretty good price.

I bought this one. Comes with 90 day return policy. This is 13th gen i5 with 16Gb ram and 512 SSD. But screen is not great but good option for school work. https://www.ebay.com/itm/127653223530

Quick little machine, good power and stability. Runs a little warm though which, at length, can affect battery health.

Yeah, these things aren't particularly fast, but I'll take one of these over a new entry level consumer laptop any day.
ETA: it's 5 years old, not 6.
I mean any games older than 2015 run great on these. It's not a slouch by any means.

Its the windows 10 that is killing me here. Windows 11 update failing to install on the HP target special from a few years back - cant get rid of the files, bogging me down. Why would they still offer it up with 10? Im looking because i cracked my case and have to steady balance to get the screen to come on and with this 10/11 issue, seems time to move on...
What are you saying? I have purposefully stayed on Windows 10 on most of my computers because Windows 11 seems to have issues. But updating to windows 11 is super easy. At any point you would be able to install windows 11 on it, either from windows or from a USB.

Doesn't cost to make a bootable flash drive and install Windows 11 yourself...takes 15 minutes and the product key should automatically work since it's tied to the motherboard.
