This refurbished Latitude 5420 is a compact business laptop that stands out for everyday work, school, and light home lab use. The i7 1185G7 and 16GB RAM configuration is repeatedly framed as the right starting point, and the memory can be expanded to 64GB with two slots. It handles browsing, Excel, Minecraft, and even college workloads well, and Windows 11 support is confirmed. The main cautions are older Intel battery life, warm running, and occasional refurb concerns like worn thermal paste or enterprise locks. A solid small laptop if you can live with an aging platform and keep it plugged in sometimes.

  • The 16GB (2x8GB) configuration can be a practical starting point because memory is upgradeable to 64GB using two slots.

  • The Latitude 5420 can support Windows 11, which helps when software like TurboTax requires the newer OS.

  • The laptop can run Minecraft smoothly and can handle basic 3D rendering and math teaching tasks.

  • Replacing dried thermal compound with PTM7950 can reduce thermal throttling and lower peak temperatures during heavy runs.

  • The i7-1185G7 generation can feel dated and may not deliver cutting-edge performance for demanding workloads.

  • Battery life can degrade on older refurbished Dell units, and the battery may need replacement or frequent docking.

  • Thermal issues can be significant on Latitude 54XX refurbs, including reports of overheating problems in the series.

  • Some devices may arrive with Autopilot or Computrace/Absolute-style enterprise locking or firmware-level persistence, so buyers should check immediately.

I have a couple of these refurbs. I found in both cases that the thermal compound on the CPU/GPU is dried and crusty causing the laptops to thermal throttle badly. Its a very easy fix and using PTM7950 dropped the temps from 100c to a max of 65c during cinebench heat runs. After that they are pretty zippy and a great deal on a small form laptop.

I would take these refurb latitudes for home lab. At least, they are much better than N100 or N150 mini PC as long as you do not take the ARM cpu.

not much difference between i7 and i5 (both quad core with hyperthreading, i7 has a bit higher clocks and a bit larger L3 cache).

were sad times for Intel

What are you saying? I have purposefully stayed on Windows 10 on most of my computers because Windows 11 seems to have issues. But updating to windows 11 is super easy. At any point you would be able to install windows 11 on it, either from windows or from a USB.
Or be like me and create a Windows 11 virtual machine for TurboTax. Then RDP to it from Windows 10 🐒

I tried to stay on windows 10. Windows 11 came in and now telling me not enough ram to install. I don't want it and can't get rid of the windows 11 files taking up my ram.

Review here [notebookcheck.net].

Recommend getting an i7 and 16GB; while memory is upgradeable to 64GB (2 slots), the cost of new memory these days is outrageous.
You are stuck with the same 4 core for i7 on the 11th gen, not worth any extra cost IMO.

I have an exact spec HP EliteBook for work. It's not fast by any means. Feels like my i3-N305 with 8GB DDR5 but battery last half as long if not less. I have a core ultra 7 155H laptop and core i9 10900K desktop so I know how faster machines feel like and this is not fast. I would consider N305 with 8GB DDR5 soldered RAM and 256GB pcie4.0 drives at around $250 or less. Yes, less ram and storage but I've used an N305 for a few months and it was quick enough and a new battery is better than a 5yr battery.

Sounds good! I'm not allowed to do benchmarks or reapply thermal paste on my work machine but just curious, does the benchmark program display CPU temp? Thanks.

It runs Minecraft fine. I have an HP EliteBook with the same specs. I installed Minecraft for work 😁 showing kids a few things about how 3D rendering is done with math.

In terms of computers what you are saying does not make sense. Ram is not taken up by files, but processes currently running on the computer. Files are on the ssd/hard drive.

Also, Windows 11 would not tell you there isn't enough ram. Maybe you mean it said there wasn't enough storage? Maybe you need to delete some files on your hard drives. Things you have installed, movies, or whatever is eating up your hard drive.

That's good to know.

SolidWorks on the other hand (the important one) is apparently a no go per reddit.
