ZIPAIR's SFO to Tokyo nonstop stands out as a bare bones fare that works best for travelers who pack light and plan ahead. The cabin is described as cleaner and quieter without included food or drinks, and the low base price can still leave room for Japan shopping, cheap meals, and budget hotels. Extra charges add up fast, though, with fees for checked bags, seat selection, carry on weight, and even some onboard services. Narita arrival also needs planning for late landings and onward transport, especially in August heat and humidity.
travelers who are willing to pack light and avoid checked bags because multiple commenters said you can max out carry-on and even wash clothes in the sink nightly, and that luggage fees weren't a big deal if you plan around the carry-on limits.
families traveling with kids under 6 (including age 6) because ZipAir fares are super-discounted for that age group, and commenters said it's been a great "gateway flight" option to Asia during peak periods.
people who plan ahead for low-cost airline add-ons because commenters reported that if you figure out the kilograms you'll need to meet maximums, pack snacks, and load offline content, you can avoid paying much extra (though it varies by route/travel style).
solo travelers who don't mind a more bare-bones flight experience because one commenter liked that there were no food/drinks unless ordered, and they found the flight cleaner/quieter than other airlines.
shoppers who want to bring home purchases because commenters suggested packing light on the way there and paying the extra to bring back a shopping bag (example: bringing back a bagged item).
travelers who might need checked bags because commenters said checking in a bag can cost around $80 one-way (and another noted checked-bag fees can be about $60 on the way back), which can erase the savings versus full-service airlines.
travelers who want a simple "all-in" price because commenters warned that ZIPAIR nickel-and-dimes you for everything (including seat cushions and even restroom visits), and after add-ons it can end up similar to other airlines.
taller travelers who plan to buy clothes in Japan because commenters said Uniqlo doesn't fit certain heights (e.g., someone 6'2"), and that sizing/length doesn't work well for taller shoppers.
people who don't speak Japanese or who expect things to go wrong because one commenter said ZipAir is "great as long as you either speak Japanese or nothing goes wrong," and if something goes wrong and you don't speak Japanese, you're SOL.
people landing late at Narita who rely on last trains or late airport transfers because commenters said Narita Terminal 3 may require walking to Terminal 2 and that a 9pm landing made it hard to catch the last local train (with a crowded, long ride).

Hotel prices were insanely low and half of my meals came out of the convenience stores or quick food in a train station. $7 ramen.
God I want to go back

not sure people on the east coast would chance a connecting flight and layover time w/ diff carrier just to save some coin. versus booking w/ a carrier which would just get to japan from the east coast of usa

Doing that on my upcoming Japan trip despite having as many checked bags as I want - I'm not dumb enough to bring checked bags to Japan.
