A bit better than the 202 but I've had a couple of them break after a couple months. One the plastic cracked and back cover won't stay on. The other, the anti reverse doesn't kick in for a turn or two. Full size 33 is more durable.

Not true. For 14 bucks this is decent. 10 would be better but oh well. Pair this with an eagle claw pack rod and keep in your backpack or trunk and you're good to go. Ask me how I know....

I have had two of these and they both have only lasted a very short time. I cannot recommend, but I do love fishing deals.

The old school zebco are way better, made of all metal and 304ss at that. The modern junk they make are useless

Yeah, get a spinning reel instead.

spincast is easy enough for my 3 year old to use. This way he can use this rod when needed.

Depends what you mean by budget. If you're looking for something that is generally affordable and also bombproof, go for an Ugly Stik. IMO one of the best price/performance/durability ratios out there.

If you want actually budget but not utter trash it's going to be hit or miss. But you're generally going to have decent luck with brands like Shakespeare, Daiwa, or Berkeley vs a lot of the neon junk you tend to see at Walmart.

If you are wondering about a specific rod you see in the store, a good initial test is to try to bend it and see if the curve is smooth. If there are flat spots anywhere as you bend it, put it back. That should be a minimum in quality. Another thing you want to try to get is a rod blank that goes all the way through the handle (think like a full tang knife). Really cheap rods will have the blank only into the handle a couple inches, and that's a sign of poor quality and performance.

Good luck!

My 12 year old loves this reel (and the rod it came on), she only joins us maybe 10% of the time but this is her go to. Me and my son have spinning and baitcast setups, but this is fine for occasional beginner use.
