Audio Products International (API) was a prominent Canadian speaker manufacturer (established in 1973) that developed and manufactured Mirage, Energy, and Athena Technologies speakers. The company was known for its in-house design and testing facilities and frequently collaborated with Canada's National Research Council in studies to determine measurable qualities listeners attributed to good sounding speakers. API's anechoic chamber was legendary.

API was acquired by the Klipsch Group in 2006 and Mirage and Athena Technologies were soon eliminated. (Klipsch Group also acquired Jamo at this time.) Energy and Jamo were acquired by Rayleigh Labs ( established in 2017 in Shenzhen, China) in late 2024.

I can't believe you can still find a deal on these. I thought the last run from Fry's a decade ago was it.
These have been the best speakers I've owned, and they really are good any everything. All music types, HT works great, dedicated stereo with or without a sub, records, lossless hifi, etc.
The best thing about this speaker line is the great detail you get but without fatigue. They have a warmer sound that never gets tiring, and use their full range to represent detail well.
I have much more expensive setups since my original purchase, but I still use the RC-70s in my nicer stereo system, also paired with Marantz.

WOW! Where are they finding these? I got this package from Fry's back in the day. I still use the surrounds and the LCR, but now they are just used in my surround setup with an added pair of RC-10's I picked up at a pawn shop for $20. I replaced the RC-70's in my 2 channel system with a pair of Infinity Kappa 7.1's like 6 years ago at least and the RC-70's are in their boxes in my basement. Been meaning to sell them.

How much of a difference would this make for movies compared to the Magnat Supreme 2002 bundle?
I'm generally happy with the Magnats for movies. They're paired with an RSL 10S MKII and RSL 12S, along with a Sony STR-AN1000. The only downside is that the center channel feels slightly weaker than the rest of the setup, although I've mostly addressed that with some tuning.
I'm wondering how much of an improvement upgrading to something like this Energy bundle would make, specifically for movie use.

If you want to get an AUDIBLE upgrade for an HT dominant system, upgrade the center (60-80% of the output including all the dialogue). Bundled systems almost always screw you on the CC.

I thought 3 way are better than 2 way for movies as well (particularly for LCR).
It's kind of a tradeoff. I would say a 3 way and 2 way with exact same materials, the 3 way would be better. But between 2 way Klipsch (with metallic horn tweeter) vs 3 way Energy (with non-metallic traditional cones) I'd pick the Klipsch for movies.

They're from the same company but the RC line was their higher line, "reference connoisseur" vs "connoisseur".

That make sense! Thanks.

I am still shocked and temped by this set, though I have absolutely no need for them. The only thing keeping me from buying a set to keep is that technically I got a better deal in ~2015 (likely the same price after inflation). Also because my theater room is full, and I have multiple stereo sets in storage right now. But goddamn do I love these speakers.
For those not familiar, the Energy RC line made use of acoustic research that was subsidized by the Canadian government, or a CA university/research firm that I can't recall. At the time, this benefited all the major CA brands and they went on to produce some fantastic speakers from Energy, PSB, and Paradigm. I compare my RC-70s to my friend's Paradigm Titans from the same era, honest speakers with a laid-back signature. We both use Marantz equipment, though, so the high roll-off may be playing a part. I never got my hands on a nice set of PSBs to test, but I imagine they do well, and have a similar fiber(often kevlar) weave to their woofers.
I bought 2 of the RC70 for $398 in 2025. Great speakers for this price range. Well made.

Rest assured the RC-LCR in this bundle is a beast. The LCR refers to left - center- right. Many enthusiasts back in the day just used 3 x RC-LCR for their three front speakers in a 5.1 set up.

In my specific living room, Klipsch horn tweeters definitely improved dialogue, but sounded best only if you were sitting directly in front of the center. I also felt the Klipsch towers were a little too bright for me for music. I swapped out to Energy RC fronts and added a db or two to the LCR center during the audyssey setup. As sharp as the Klipsch? Maybe not, but the dialogue sounds plenty clear even if you're sitting way off to the side.

Ymmv, that's just my ears in my living room.

Yeah I mean, that's kind of what I said. I find klipsch better for movies, the brighter metallic tweeters really sharpen action scenes and details, especially in surround sound. But they're not great for music, being 2 way and metallic tweeters. Energy RC are better for that.

Seeing a deal like this takes me back...bought a bunch of Jamo S-series and an Energy Take-5 from Fry's or Vann's (can't remember which). So tempted to move on from the Jamos

Just pulled the trigger on this deal. I've always wanted to purchase a set of Energy RC speakers, but never thought I'd come across a set like this for this price. Thanks for posting this!
