I just got an email titled "Get $10 off your next meal" from Cash App by Square. Went over to Cash App on my phone, and saw the other offer for $5 off coffee shops too.
We've seen lots of offers like this before. If you're like me, anytime you see this you just want to lock and load it right away without fuss. And especially without making an in-person visit because I'd rather load up on balance if possible. Also, sometimes the offers disappear because the amount of offers available gets used up fast by everyone.
So let me make this easy for you. See my instructions below in the last section:
Offer Details
- $10 off any restaurant purchase
- $5 off any coffee shop purchase.
How to Activate- Open Cash App > Money tab > tap your card > Explore
- Activate the offer, then go directly to the restaurant or coffee shop's own app/website
- Buy or reload a gift card using your Cash Card — discount SHOULD apply. (YMMV)
How It Works
Cash App offers trigger based on the Merchant Category Code (MCC) sent with the transaction. Buying directly from a merchant routes that under their own MCC, should qualify. Third-party platforms and retailers have different MCCs that don't. There's lots of data points online. Some merchants like Starbucks or Dunkin' works. Sometimes people report they also don't.
How To Trigger Quickly
$10 Restaurant Offer
- There are lots of data points online that show reloading a gift card for these merchants are likely to work: Chipotle, Subway, Panera Bread, Domino's, Shake Shack. Standard restaurants would work too probably, but that's too much work for me.
- Confirmed data point: I bought a $10 in the Panera Bread app and it worked. Triggered offer with Cash Card via Apple Pay. Got the gift card 15 minutes later in my email.
$5 Coffee Shop Offer
- Again, lots of data points online that show reloading a gift card works online. EXCEPT, I noticed people saying despite it showing that you need only $5 minimum spend, it seems triggering the offer online needs to be at least $5.01 or more. I couldn't confirm this.
- I tried to do Starbucks $5, $5.01, and $10 reload in the app and it wouldn't worked.
- Confirmed data point: My daughters love to drink tea, so we have tea shop here called Hey Tea. I went to the Hey Tea app and loaded in a $10 gift card and paid with my Cash Card using Apple Pay. Triggered offer. Worked instantly.
