Synology's 4 bay DiskStation stands out for its polished DSM software, strong backup tools, and solid performance for home storage, Plex, and photo libraries. The DS925 plus brings more RAM headroom, dual 2.5 gigabit Ethernet, faster read and write speeds, and expansion support, while the DS425 plus is attractive for Plex because its Intel Celeron has Quick Sync. The main cautions are Synology's drive and SSD compatibility restrictions, higher total cost once RAM and disks are added, and the fact that the DS925 plus lacks a GPU for transcoding. It is a capable platform, but the value depends heavily on the workload and storage budget.

Common Questions (5)

  • Synology's newer units have used drive-compatibility restrictions, and third-party HDDs or SSDs can lose features if they are not on the approved list. The restriction has also been walked back and can reportedly be bypassed with a script, but Synology-branded SSDs are still required for some cache or storage-pool use cases on certain models.

  • The DS425+ is the better Plex host because its Intel Celeron J4125 has Quick Sync and an iGPU. The DS925+ uses a Ryzen V1500B with no GPU, so it is less suited for hardware transcoding.

  • For photo/video backups, file sharing, PC backups, and VPN access, the DS425+ can be enough if you are not running Plex, Docker, or VMs. The DS925+ is more capable and may be worth the extra $100 if you want more RAM, faster networking, and expansion headroom.

  • The DS425+ ships with 2GB of RAM, and Synology Photos advanced features like object detection require 4GB. That means you may need to add memory, which reduces the price advantage versus the DS925+.

  • No. The DS925+ is listed at $512 plus about $12 shipping, so the real out-the-door price is closer to $524 before drives.

Note you can add a 2.5GBe USB NIC for about $19. Easily done, driver install might take 10 minutes with reboots.
Run a script back here, install a USB NIC here…
It's funny that you don't see the overall problem here.

No problems here, it works flawlessly. And if you're afraid of adding a USB NIC to a box...wow.

The huge backlash by existing customers made Synology to walk back on the drive compatibility fiasco

Yep - six months ago everything was walked back, yet people still talk about it, some not realizing it was all walked back. The bad vibes will continue to hit Synology for years.
Of course, hours after the units were first released to the public, a year ago, people had developed easy ways to add any drive you wanted. It's Linux, after all...

Only you can define "worth it".
If you make $15 an hour, and this represents 30+ hours of work, I'd say no way.
If you make $100 an hour, and this is just beer money, then, maybe.
It all depends on if you're using the 218+ to the max and if you need 2 more bays and 2.5GB ethernet (which you can get for $19 with a USB 2.5GB NIC in a few minutes...) - if you don't need 2 more bays & faster CPU, then it's pointless to get this.
From a passmark point of view, the DS425+ is about 2.5x faster, which is nice for docker containers and such. But from a networking/gigabit point of view, it's unlikely to be that much faster, if only on gigabit at home. It all depends on what you want to do.

Came here to see if this was in the discussion! I would have excluding Synology from my options but now they are back on the table!
