Synology's 4 bay DiskStation stands out for its polished DSM software, strong backup tools, and solid performance for home storage, Plex, and photo libraries. The DS925 plus brings more RAM headroom, dual 2.5 gigabit Ethernet, faster read and write speeds, and expansion support, while the DS425 plus is attractive for Plex because its Intel Celeron has Quick Sync. The main cautions are Synology's drive and SSD compatibility restrictions, higher total cost once RAM and disks are added, and the fact that the DS925 plus lacks a GPU for transcoding. It is a capable platform, but the value depends heavily on the workload and storage budget.
The DS925+ can serve as a major upgrade over older DiskStation models for home file sharing and backups.
The DS925+ supports higher memory capacity with ECC upgradeability, which can help for local backup scenarios.
The DS425+ can be a better fit for Plex hosting because its J4125 includes an iGPU for Quick Sync transcoding.
Synology's included apps can add practical value, including Backup for Business with fast deduplication space savings.
Synology's drive and SSD compatibility restrictions can force use of branded drives or Synology NVMe SSDs for caching.
The DS925+ deal may not include truly free shipping because the B&H price can add about $12 shipping.
DSM 7.2+ updates can disable kernel graphics drivers on the DS425+ and block Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby hardware transcoding.
The DS425+ includes only one multi-gig LAN port and may require Synology-branded M.2 SSDs for caching or flash storage.

My only issue now is the new NAS drives I'm trying to buy. I missed the black Friday deal cuz I was hoping cyber Monday was going to have the same deals if not better but as soon as midnight hit, all the BF deals were gone and everything was either full price or OOS. I had the drives and this ds925+ in my cart waiting for Cyber Monday.
Western digital is now under a contract to make their drives for enterprise thru 2027 so most of them are full price, way way over priced to people ripping others off or OOS.

Given this use case, is the DS425+ good enough? It would be great to save the extra $100 for disks if the performance difference isn't worth it for my situation.
