Jesus, you aren't kidding. The HD prices are what's stopping me so far from upgrading my old DS916+ to something like a UGreen running TrueNAS or building a DIY NAS. I have 3 Seagate Ironwolf Pro 16TB drives in my DS916+ that I bought for $199 each around BF of 2023. I went to look at current prices and almost blacked out.

I specifically mentioned mirror and striped mirror in the first paragraph. Most think 4 bay NAS and don't want to take the hit on space using a mirorr. Do you not know what mirror means?

Yeah nas 2x wd red IronWolf Pro ST14000NE0008 and 2x seagate something. Ill provide info including spinning hour and all that jazz but I got a busy day today. I live in NYC. I may just end up posting on fb marketplace or something too.

Synology lock hard drive is too exacerbated. They did the same with memory but gradually expanding their compatibility memory list. Video Station is dead for a while since it didn't support 4k and no longer retrieve meta from online media database. Ugreen OS is still inferior to Synology in term of open OS for third party applications. The aggressive Ugreen are pushing for many high end products make a lot of doubt about their motivation.

Dont buy unless you are not going to use ssd. synology lock 3rd party ssd out of their stupid compatibility list. their synology ssd is very very very expensive.

yeah, it's lowest price, but you will pay more on RAM, and their own synology nvme ssd. you cannot use 3rd party nvme ssd for caches or storage pool.

Long gone are the days when a second-hand Toshiba 12TB server HDD was sold for $75. Neither a NAS nor a HDD purchase right now is considered a good investment unless I desperately need more storage. Good thing is that this has forced me to take time to rescan all old files on my three TerraMaster NAS and deleted 10+ TB worthless data (Windows 7 ISOs, outdated driver installation files for my retired PCs, etc.)

Be careful. Synology has restricted their drive compatibility list so that you can only use their branded drives. And they weren't cheap before the price increases. Now? Who knows.
