Well at least u r more humble than most, so you are probably a good 4.0 or a 4.0 who can actually hit the ball. Others have no business complaining about balls. Along your lines, half those players dont even change their grip every 7 hours. More like every 7 years.
yeah, I was honestly pretty sloppy with both restringing and regripping when I was younger (and hit a lot harder), until I started getting elbow pain. For me, both are more important for my game than expensive balls or a new racket.

Smartest comment here... u be surprised how many students I have who are at least 4.0 and been playing "competitively" for over 5-10 years and have no clue on strings and grips.... astounding.

Ah, you're a pro ... that makes a lot of sense. I think a lot of players (like me for a long time) put their racket back in the bag and don't think about it again until they open it before a game.

By far the stupidest stubbornness I had was refusing to buy proper tennis shoes and just playing in old running shoes, which seemed fine forever, until I tore my meniscus in the middle of a game ...

Running shoes ARE THE WORST... then walking shoes... then cross trainers... then basketball shoes MAYBE if desperate.... otherwise u r better off playing bare foot. You lucky u didnt also tear your ankle.

haha, yeah. I should be glad. Now a year after surgery and realizing my knee probably won't ever the be the same again, and no more long distance or fast trail running, but at least I can still play tennis..
