What's the reason to take Zinc if the doctor doesn't tell you so?

Thanks. Noticed last night I was running low. This stuff supposedly helps boost your immune system and also helps men's libido if you're old like me.

Zinc can help prevent some viruses or shorten sickness times. This is not magic or equivalent to actual antivirals or antibiotics in the case of bacterial infections, but it offers some minimal protection with minimal risk. Also if you take any copper supplementation for any reason it can deplete your zinc stores which can lead to some issues. I believe it also has some effect on testosterone, but this is probably only if you are actually low on zinc from your general diet and you are 40+ male. All that being said I believe 50mg is a pretty high dose of zinc as daily supplementation, breaking them in half is easy though 25mg is still on the higher end of daily supplementation but poses minimal risk of gastrointestinal issues. I think the recommended daily dose is somewhere around 15mg, but in a 25mg dose you probably aren't absorbing all 25mg so its probably fine.

I just checked the NIH RDA:
Upper daily limit is 40mg
Recommended
Adult Men: 11mg/day
Adult Women: 8mg/day

Can confirm some nausea when taking Zinc in general. I pump vitamin C/D/Zinc when trying to shorten a cold.

I also get really nauseous. I bought it in liquid version to be able to take small doses throughout the day as needed.

This one is better than it first looks, but the label tells the real story:
Per 1 capsule:
  • 90 mg elemental magnesium
  • from 500 mg magnesium glycinate compound
  • plus 40 mg vitamin C
So the big "500 mg" on the front is not 500 mg of usable magnesium. The actual magnesium you are getting is 90 mg per capsule.
My read:
  • Form: good. Magnesium glycinate is one of the better forms for calmness, sleep support, and fewer stomach issues.
  • Dose strength: moderate to low per capsule. If you want a meaningful magnesium dose, 1 capsule is pretty light.
  • Flexibility: decent, because the label says you can take up to 3 capsules daily, which would give you 270 mg elemental magnesium total.
  • Extra vitamin C: not a big deal either way, but it is unnecessary if you only want magnesium.
For you, this means:
  • If you want gentle nightly magnesium, this is fine.
  • If you want a stronger dose without taking multiple capsules, this is not ideal.
  • If you already take magnesium oxide from your doctor, you should not stack this casually without checking total magnesium intake.
Bottom line: good form, okay product, but not very potent per capsule.
I would call it a decent buy, not a great one.
A practical rating:
  • Quality/form: 8/10
  • Dose efficiency: 6/10
  • Overall: 7/10
