I've seen the 1997 anime and I slowly grew to love it. It took its time to pick up but when it did, it felt very well written.

The ending of the show was unexpected. Show went places.

Never really followed through with manga. Do you folks recommend it?

I watched the old anime series without knowing almost anything about berserk. Got hooked from the start. That ending left me years traumatized.

I was about to buy this but had a look just to see what I was getting into. There are 13 more volumes after this mostly around $30 each. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, just tossing out some information.
