Gen 1 (2022) and 2 (2024) Scribe have the same internals (CPU, RAM, battery) and the same panel. The main functional difference is the gen 2 display has a slightly more paper-like texture. There are cosmetic changes such as the white bezel on the gen 2, different shell colors and a slightly smaller bezel gap. The software features should be identical between them since Amazon pushed all the features previously to the gen 1. The gen 1 with a premium pen is a much better value in most regards.

As for the new gen 3 (2025) 11-inch models, those are true upgrades over the gen 1 and 2 with different hardware, a larger screen and more. However, they start around $500 if you want the backlit version.

For $82 you get PW5 sig edition (32g) and in very good condition. Returnable. Mine came with firmware 5.18.3

The 2022 Kindle Scribe stands out as a strong value for reading and note taking, especially if you want the large 11 inch screen without paying for the newer models. Gen 1 and gen 2 share the same core hardware and software, while gen 2 mainly adds a slightly more paper like display texture and cosmetic changes. The newer gen 3 is a real hardware upgrade, but backlit versions start around $500. Caveats include occasional stock disappearing during checkout and some returned units lacking PDF renaming, which makes organization harder. A practical pick if you want the Scribe experience at a lower price.

  • A Paperwhite 5 Signature Edition (32GB) reportedly arrived in very good condition with firmware 5.18.3 and a returnable purchase.

    redshirtensign

  • A Scribe buyer reportedly found the deal price better than the standard $67 and noted the unit did not have lockscreen ads.

    BigCTM

  • A Scribe comparison suggests the 2022 gen 1 and 2024 gen 2 share the same core internals and software features, making gen 1 a strong value option.

    SSteveTX

  • A gen 1 Scribe user reportedly uses it for reading books and manga and chose it over a regular Kindle primarily for manga support.

    StrongField530

  • A Scribe upgrade discussion suggests gen 2 differences from gen 1 are mostly display texture and cosmetic changes, so functional improvements may feel limited.

    SSteveTXch3ckm8

  • Woot reportedly does not hold Kindle inventory in the cart during checkout, and the Paperwhite sold out while applying the code.

    dealstorm

  • A returned Scribe reportedly lacked the ability to rename a PDF file sent to the device, which made organization difficult.

    doughnet

  • A KindleModding approach reportedly requires careful steps to prevent firmware updates past 5.18.6 and recommends using Airplane Mode to avoid updates.

Paperwhite sold out as I was adding their code. Really annoying that Woot doesn't hold inventory in cart for even the minute or so it takes to check out.

Is the 2022 gen 1 scribe worth it? Vs 2024 gen 2 or 2025 gen 3?

Seems like the better note taking/ai features in gen2+ are worth it

Absolutely. The improvements are minimal except the newest gen receives the latest software updates much earlier

Ordered one...This seems like a better deal than the standard one at $67. Plus it doesn't have lockscreen ads. Thanks.

I bought an returned mine when there was a previous sale.

It lacked the ability to rename a pdf file sent to the scribe. Made organizing a pain.
