Personally, I would rather go for an OG Z1E Ally over this. The Z2A is quite a bit weaker than the Z1E.

Even though I prefer the OLED deck or the OG Ally, this is a pretty decent deal given the current market, if I didn't have a deck I would totally get this one, since I ONLY play indies on my deck. I had the OG ally and it was great but the battery borders unusable.

If you have a decent gaming PC and your PC/ps5 are hardwired, take a look at gaming on your phone via moonlight/ps5 remote play.

a lot of people are asking about the Xbox Ally with Z2A vs the regular Ally with Z1 Extreme.

The answer is that the older Z1 Extreme model is significantly faster. It has 2x the CPU cores, bigger caches, and 50% more GPU cores. And it uses newer technologies like a 4nm manufacturing process (vs 6nm) and RDNA 3 (vs RDNA 2).

What does that mean? For many games the Z1 Extreme performs 20% faster (Shadow of Tomb Raider, 15 watts). However the Z2A still generally reaches or exceeds the performance of the Steam Deck.

But the advantage of the Xbox Ally with Z2A here is the battery. It has a 60 watt hours battery vs the Z1 Extreme model at 40 watt hours. It also doesn't suffer from the MicroSD card slot issues that plagued the original Z1 Extreme (it could fry your cards).

Personally I'd see if I could find a used ROG Ally X, which has the higher performing Z1 Extreme chip (and beyond that also slightly faster RAM), but also has an 80 watt hour battery, and 24GB of RAM. It'll cost you a little bit more but worth it IMHO.

I would also seriously consider the Legion Go S with Z2 Go. Also a little more but you get a better chip and a better screen.

The Games must redeemed by 05/02/2026? Am I reading that correctly? I was thinking of offloading these off somewhere else but would make it difficult to sell if that's the hard date for redeeming the codes. Someone please tell me I am wrong.

Compared to the Steam Deck, the Z2A is about 30% more powerful, and the Z1E is almost twice more powerful. However, the higher res screen and Windows overhead takes some of that performance. What you're looking at is about 45fps here on the Xbox Ally Z2A in Cyberpunk 2077 with the Steam Deck preset. It might seem strange, but if you write over the Microsoft OS with SteamOS, your framerate will improve and get into the range where the Asus' variable refresh rate starts working.

So, it's not as powerful as an Xbox Series home console. But at 1080p or 720P and low settings, you're going to be able to play most AAA games, and performance usually improves after a game launch as devs update with added optimization. You're also going to be able to tackle your PC backlog, try indie games, and play multiplayer without paying for a subscription. That said, if you DO pay for a game streaming service like Xbox Gamepass Ultimate or NVIDIA GeForce Now (you're going to own nothing and you're going to like it!), the Xbox Ally is also a great platform for cloud gaming, especially if you use one of the two USB-C ports to connect to a big TV and grab a nice gamepad from GameSir or 8BitDo.

You can play Fortnite on this, your iOS/Android smartphone or tablet, almost any potato. Can't play it on SteamOS but that's because the devs assume cheaters won't use Windows like they have for three decades XD

You may enjoy adding this. It's an inherent nice thing to have a portable device able to game in bed, hammock, back porch, on vacation, while someone else is using the TV, bring to a friend's house for multiplayer, etc. It's also able to have really great battery life and graphics if you remote play from your PC or PS5 to this handheld (Mesh networks are bad for remote play).

In competition, you could also consider an Android tablet, like the powerful Lenovo Legion Y700. With Android, you open up a whole other platform of games (and emulators),Gamehub and Gamenative PC gaming emulation is advancing FAST, it also streams from your PC and PS5 well, and as a tablet it has a larger, nicer screen than the Ally X and you can slip it into thinner bag sleeves, choose your own controller.

Screw it.... Just ordered the Ally X from Best Buy for $1000 before they raise the price.
