When you receive an item there is a policy where you don't share where you received the item from and for what price, so I get the sense it's a way for local or retailers without a national network to clear out their warehouse to consumers without violating floors set by manufacturers or utilizing other services that take more of a cut than greentoe. I've had warranties honored by the manufacturers so these are from authorized retailers and your item should have an actual receipt from the store included with it.
Packaging is extremely solid and not Amazon-esque and at least to my knowledge, I've never seen others burned, so I cannot comment on protections but let's be real...you can always chargeback and always use a credit card with protections in these cases.
The other negative to note is that every time. Without fail, I'm added to an email blast or marketing texts from the retailer...but meh.

Speaker is "splash proof" too which is nice since I use it poolside quite a bit and it does get splashed from time to time.

Bass response is not as good as an equivalent wired power speaker, but that is to be expected from a battery powered speaker. Bass hits take a lot of power to do, and it just isn't available on battery. It's still good enough for a small-ish sized space like the inside of a 2-car garage or something similar.
The battery has to be installed in the speaker to charge it while connected to AC power. If you get multiple JBL branded batteries, you can't charge them unless they are installed in the speaker. My suggestion is to get a couple of Aliexpress compatible batteries. The batteries include a USB-C port, so you can charge them when outside of the speaker. That can make running multiple batteries more convenient to use and charge.
I've used a DJ controller with this (DDJ-FLX4) and it works well. You will need to connect to the 'Daisy Chain In' port for best results, not the AUX IN port. Connecting to AUX IN routes audio through the speaker's on-board audio processing. This will introduce a delay in the audio which can make mixing very hard to do. Using the daisy chain in port bypasses this audio processing while also eliminating any delay in the audio. You can also use the daisy chain ports to connect multiple speakers together while still avoiding the audio delay.
The speaker has a plastic cover at the bottom that can be removed an reveals a speaker pole mount. It makes it easy to mount the speaker up at head level so the audio projects better.
I think it's a good buy for my use-case. It's impressive as well if you are only used to the small beercan sized speakers.
