I am using this for over a year now, 3 out of 4 filters need to be changed now which costs around $90 dollars and the 4th filter is replaced every 24 months. So 3 filters should get replaced every year and 1 filter should be replaced every 2 years. I never had any issues with it. I recommended buying.

The Man and I were just talking about this one last night, he really speaks highly of this one.
He knows a lot about water filters.

This Bluevua product should work well if it works as well as the smaller countertop version. Ours is a year and a half old, and still works great! We have well water with TDS in the 500-600 range. and the Bluevua gets the TDS number down to 5-7ppm. We're still on the original filter, but we only filter 2-3L/day using it for the coffee maker and drinking water.

I heard they are developing a version which would allow you to select what to keep. Preliminary marketing name is "Maxwell daemon", should be available soon.

We have extremely hard water where I live. Would that affect the effectiveness of these countertop reverse osmosis units? Will I need to spend extra for a water softener or something similar?

I would say no because this puts minerals back into the water so its not completely 0 TDS water. What little it does put back may eventually build up and affect the efficiency of your machine. Source is my brain so someone else feel free to correct me.

Do you want entropy? Because that's how you get entropy

The filtration will work as advertised. No need for anything. You might need to replace the filters more often due to the extra hard water though.

Thank you for your insite. I thought I read the source that puts the minerals back in it is inserted at the top and can be removed.
