I assume reading the original Dune is essential before reading this one?

Strange, I was told this went on sale at Google Play Store, too, but it is currently showing up for $9.99.

Movies are not even close to as good as the books. Par for the course I guess.

It's because the books are absolutely incredible - I'm happy that Dune Part 1 sparked my interest enough to read Dune, Messiah, and Children of Dune all before Dune Part 2 came out! Some of, if not the best, fiction I've ever read!

No, they're not. But I'm glad we got a big-budget Dune trilogy with a competent and passionate director, great production values, and excellent casting/performances. There's a lot that could have gone wrong.

Did this deal expire or was it not available in the US? I saw 1.99 earlier but when I clicked to purchase via 1-click it's telling me that the prices varies by region and suddenly it's 9.99.

I think the Sci-Fi miniseries was done more accurately to the books but obviously they didn't have the budget the movies did.
