Because they are the same price. One is a Pro laptop and the other an Air laptop. There's more to it than the two you referenced.MacBook Pro - MiniLED display with 120hz, true WiFi 7.0, more ports, HDMI, SDXC card reader, way better speakers, will not thermal throttle as quick since it has a fan for better performance.

You are correct in principle. However, it's ironic that the MacBook Air has WiFi 7 where as the MacBook Pro with the basic M5 chip does not (it has WiFi 6e).
With the MacBook Air you get:
1) a larger screen 2) more memory 3) lighter weight and thinner 4) WiFi 7 5) Bluetooth 6 (vs 5.3)
With MBP M5 you get:
1) a higher quality screen with 1000 nits brightness and 120Hz 2) more ports 3) fan that can reduce thermal throttling 4) upto 33% more battery life 5) better speakers 6) better microphones

That's the same price for the 14" MacBook Pro M5 16gb/1TB, $1550. I rather get the Pro instead at this price point.

Why is a heavier 14" (vs 15") with 16GB RAM (vs 24) a valid comparison?

As a Software Engineer, the only time I felt my 15" MacBook M4 Air(10-Core GPU) 16gb ram 256gb SSD was limited was when I was using memory leaky applications (Running 2x web storm instances + Cursor) or my system was out of space.

The SSD should remain at least 10% free as it's used as memory in a way(like a high performance pagefile).

Overall, I do not regret the purchase. I did buy, up front, a hub that supports multiple monitors, USBs, and a Gen 4 NVMe SSD.

My speed tests were actually al little faster than the local drive, which was great... and cheaper than the SSD upgrade premium paid at the time.

To get you an Idea, I purchased this. Look for something similar in specs that supports 40gbs if you want similar SSD speeds to local.

Would prefer the M5 Pro chip vs the plain vanilla M5 if getting a MacBook Pro.
