These 7 inch Vampliers are specialized stripped screw and seized fastener pliers that work especially well when regular locking pliers fall short. The Engineer made versions and the black oxide model get strong praise for reliability, with long term use on old bikes and other hand work. They are also described as handy to keep around for future repairs. The main caveats are that recessed screws can be out of reach, and cheaper alternatives like Workpro or Icon can cover much of the job for less.

  • The black oxide version can work well for stripped screws when cheaper versions disappoint.

  • The pliers can help remove seized fasteners, but heat or penetrating oil may be needed first.

  • The 7-inch size has been useful for long-term ownership across many variations.

  • The tool can be effective for restoring old bikes and can save time on stubborn fasteners.

  • Cheaper knockoffs and alternative brands can do much of the work for about half the price.

  • The 7-inch price has stayed around the same level for months, so it may not be a hot deal.

  • The tool may not help when stripped screws sit in a recessed position like a sprinkler valve.

  • Quality differences between lower-cost knockoffs are uncertain, which can make value harder to judge.

Coincidence, I have to deal with 2 stripped screws in a sprinkler valve today but these won't help because they are in a recessed position. But good to have one around so I will get one for next time. Thanks.

Are these really worth buying vs just using locking pliers?
They're definitely better at removing screws. Regular vise-grip locking pliers can occasionally do the job, but that's true with many pliers. It really just depends on what you need.

PS. even if you really do need a pair, there are cheaper options that do 90% of the work for around half the price, as has already been mentioned. Cheap ones from brands like Workpro (on sale FTW!), or almost as good ones from brand like Icon from HBF, currently on sale this weekend in-store.

I own these and they work well but this seems to be a common price and not really a "great" deal. It is a good deal and worthwhile to have in the toolbox
