Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 is a tiny, screenless dash cam that mounts neatly behind the rear view mirror and is praised for sharp video, a very easy app, and solid performance in hot Florida sun. The supercapacitor design is called out as better suited to heat than a battery, and local recording works with a high endurance microSD card. The main drawbacks are Garmin's paywalled storage service and reports that the app can fail to load videos. It is a compact, discreet option if cloud storage is not a priority.

Common Questions (4)

  • It uses a supercapacitor, not a battery. That matters in hot climates because supercapacitors are less prone to heat-related wear than lithium batteries.

  • Local recording is free if you use your own high-endurance microSD card. The paywalled part is Garmin's cloud/storage service, not the camera's basic local saving.

  • Yes. It is very small and can be mounted behind the rear-view mirror to stay out of sight, which makes it a good choice if you do not want a built-in screen.

  • It is reported to hold up well in Florida sun and stay mounted without falling. A separate comment notes a Garmin 2 failed after about two and a half years in California heat, so long-term heat durability may still be a concern.

Be aware that storage for this is behind a paywall
It's for that reason why I haven't bought a Garmin dashcam.

There's no battery in this camera. Avoiding a camera because it has a battery makes no sense, the battery provides some functionality when the car is off, if/when it fails the camera still works.
Everything I've read regarding use in hot and sunny climates recommends a super capacitor or no battery VS Li batt.

I have one of these and I have a Cobra. I can tell you this is far superior. Especially in the Florida sun, it doesn't fall, it's extremely small, and it makes great-quality video. The app is very easy. On the Cobra app, it takes forever to load. I definitely recommend one of these. Part of me wants to get another one and switch out that stupid Cobra. Deal is a good one.
The cobras are actually first gen Garmin minis. I have 2 and when I tried to buy another one I saw they were discontinued and now we're sold under Cobra. My app works great, hopefully you can try using the cobra with the Garmin app?

Do any dash cams come with free Cloud storage? Local storage is free and gets the job done.

1080p res. on a 2026 dashcam is crazy work. Talk about sticking it to the customer. Not a slickdeal tbqhwy.

Happened to me many times when i had old cams with suction cups. That's why i use strong adhesive 3M 20lb or Gorilla 60lbs rated tape.
Yep. Anything's better than a sucky suction cup.

Which Viofo do you recommend?
If you want something small, VIOFO A119 Mini 2.

If you don't mind getting a high endurance micro SD card, then local storage is free from there.
