Valvoline MaxLife Multi Vehicle ATF is a versatile synthetic fluid that gets strong marks for smooth shifting and broad compatibility across many older transmissions. It is described as working well in Mercedes 722.6, Honda DW 1 and non CVT Hondas, Toyota WS applications, Nissan Pathfinders, Dodges, Tacomas, and even some power steering systems that call for ATF. Drain and fill services are repeatedly tied to quicker, smoother shifts and fixes for shudder or slipping. The main caution is that it is not universal, since some Honda and other transmissions still call for OEM specific fluid. It is a flexible option when the spec matches.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is reported to work in Honda DW-1 and Toyota WS applications, including drain-and-fill services on Hondas, Toyotas, and Acura models. For higher-mileage units, a gradual drain-and-refill approach is recommended, with the transmission brought up to the proper fill level and repeated changes used to replace more of the old fluid.

  • It has been used to eliminate shudder and improve shifting after drain-and-fill service, including on a Honda MDX and a vehicle with terrible shifting shudder. In another case, smoother shifts were noticed almost immediately after service, suggesting it can help when the issue is fluid-related.

  • It has been used in a 2003 Tacoma as a Toyota WS replacement, in a Nissan Pathfinder for years, and in a Dodge that originally called for expensive ZF fluid with no issues after 40K miles. The jug is said to list compatibility on the back, and users often pair the swap with a pan drop and filter change when moving away from OEM fluid.

  • It can be used where the OEM power steering system specifies ATF, such as a Lexus system that calls for Dexron. It should not be used in vehicles that require a dedicated power steering fluid, like some Hondas.

  • It has been used successfully in Mercedes 722.6 valve-body work and is described as working as well as Pentosin ATF134. The fluid is also reported to be a good fit for Chrysler/Mercedes 722.6 applications, making it a lower-cost alternative to the pricier Pentosin fluid.

I remember I was scared to use this for my Dodge as it wanted the overpriced ZF fluid. Anyways 40K miles later zero issues. I plan to use this on my 3rd gen Tacoma next. However since going from OEM fluid, I will drop the pan and change the filter, to get as much OEM out. Remember it clearly states on the back of the jug what it's compatible with 💡 you'll be fine!

Use only manufacturer fluid in transmissions. Aftermarket fluid has a good chance of destroying your transmission. "One size doesn't fit all".

OMG no it does not. Just stop posting your wives' tales.

Is there a compatibility car list for this fluid? I have a 2014 Honda crv and a 2021 rav4 hybrid that I could stock up on(?)
Maxlife ATF is compatible with Honda's DW-1 and Toyota's WS ATF! Drain the hot oil and refill. Follow the mfr's guide to verify proper fill level.

The $2/qt Idemitsu ATF Type H at Advance Auto is also compatible with Honda's DW-1. $2 Idemitsu Type TLS-LV is equivalent for your Toyota.

If the transmission has more than 90K miles, and this is the first oil change, then drain and add exactly one quart. Drive 500 miles to acclimate the transmission to the new ATF mixture. Repeat two more times if no transmission slippage. Final step is to perform a full drain (about 0.7 gallon). Drain and refill every 30K miles for optimum performance.

I can see shift degradation using Denso's Techstream around the 22K mark with my Corolla. Therefore, I use 24K ATF OCI.

Idemitsu make the OEM ATF fluid for Honda.

If your local Advanced Auto has any of this Type H-Plus left, I'd stock up at $2 a quart. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com...m=Idemitsu

My Honda dealership charges $10 a quart for DW-1 .

Get Idemitsu for $7.80/gal at Advanced Auto. Avoid brand loyalty when it comes to lubricant.

Good price, however I think $25 is the average shelf price at Walmart, and as someone else said Amazon will occasionally do 3 jugs for $50 sales.

Thanks for the information, I was able to get several quarts nearby!
I have also used the MaxLife ATF in Hondas for years with no issues.

This is the second Honda-centric score for me from Advance Auto. Last year I got several gallons on of Pentosin Pentofrost A3 coolant for $2.35 each!

I did a 4x drain and fill on my 2015 MDX a few thousand miles ago and it runs great. Fixed my shuddering issue. This fluid is recommended by many on Honda/Acura forums.

Honda uses different transmission throughout their vehicles. I have the 9 Speed in my Pilot, it's manufactured by ZF and not Honda.
so this might be fine for few, you can not generalize it.

that's why there are many aftermarket fluids on the market Smilie.
and even transmission manufacturers does not produce their own fluid and refine the oil lol but buy from specialized companies.
