The MacBook Air 13 inch M5 with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD is being treated as a fast, lightweight upgrade, especially for app launches, gaming, and even llama.cpp and Ollama workloads. Battery life is also called out as better with this configuration. The Midnight, Sky Blue, and Starlight finishes can fade over time, while Sky Blue has been praised for hiding scratches well and silver is described as the exception. The screen is noted as weaker in color and brightness than a 14 inch MacBook Pro, so it suits buyers who value speed and portability over display quality.
People upgrading from an older MacBook Pro who want a thinner, lighter laptop with faster app launches and better game performance, because this model feels faster in those tasks.
People replacing an aging MacBook Pro with a dead screen, because this model is fast enough to serve as a new portable machine while the old one becomes a desktop.
Best Buy has better trade-in pricing for M1, M2, and M3 MacBook Air models, with an extra $150 bonus mentioned for those generations. The bonus does not apply to M4, and the M4-to-M5 upgrade is described as mainly an SSD-speed jump.
It can feel faster in everyday use, with quicker app launches, llama.cpp/ollama TTFT and TPS, and better gaming performance. The tradeoff is a worse screen for color and brightness than the 14-inch M1 Pro.
Midnight, Sky Blue, and Starlight can fade over time, while silver is the exception. Sky Blue also hides scratches well, and some units have stayed the same color after regular use.
Yes. The 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD configuration is reported to have better battery life, making it the stronger pick if you want more endurance from the Air.

I wouldn't call it better for trade in. My recently purchased 2025 Apple MacBook Air 13" M4 shows $550 for trade in. Not worth trading or upgrading.
Do you even read what it said "M1,M2 or M3".
Your M4 is not even in list for bonus $150 so of course it is not a good trade in. The only significant performance jump from M4 to M5 is SSD speed drive.

Yes, I read it. Even with the additional $150, for M1/M2/M3, the trade in is still crap. Unless you have the M1 8gb/256gb where you are getting an excellent value because it it's worth $300 in the used market.
