Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Lawn Food is a pre emergent lawn treatment that stops crabgrass and other seeds from germinating while feeding the lawn. The comments also point to practical timing cues, like applying before soil temperatures reach about 55 degrees or when forsythia blooms, and watering it in or spreading it before rain. The main caution is that it also blocks new grass seed, so overseeding has to wait. Some also feel it is too late in warmer areas or less effective than pro grade options.

  • Homeowners timing spring crabgrass prevention, because it stops crabgrass and other seeds from germinating when applied before soil warms up.

  • Lawn caretakers who want a pre-emergent before grass starts greening, because it fits the window before germination and before overseeding.

  • People covering a large yard on a tight seasonal schedule, because one bag can be stocked for next season and still deliver effective prevention.

  • Homeowners who already see crabgrass germinating, because a pre-emergent is too late and a post-emergent product is needed instead.

  • Lawn owners planning to overseed soon, because it also prevents new grass seed from germinating.

  • People expecting professional-grade coverage from a small amount, because it may take about six times more product to match a pro-grade pre-emergent.

  • Shoppers wanting a fertilizer with phosphorus, because this formula is phosphorus-free.

Maybe where you are at but...not the case in much of the country
Don't agree with much of the country being ok to apply a pre-emergent.. Maybe in the northern tier of the country there is limited time to apply a pre-emergent, but for most of the country that has experienced a very warm month of March, the soil temperature is already 55 degrees or above. Crabgrass germination has already begun. A post emergent weed control product will have to be used.

What post emergent works on crabgrass? Roundup? The stuff is so resilient.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

U do not want these if u want good results. Problem with these are it takes 6x more product to equal the same as a professional grade product. I've done lawn care for 25 years. What u want is a 4 liter bottle of barracade. 40$ on websites or amazon. 1 oz willl cover 1000 sq feet. The ingredient u want is called pro diamine. The pros all use it

Maybe 'a lot' wasn't the best choice of words, 'some' may have been better. Although, to my original point...your same line of reasoning would apply to your (blanket) statement that it's to late. There are areas where it's not so...ok, here we are. Bottom line... If your lawn isn't greening up yet, let er rip, if it is...post emergent (most often a liquid/spray) is your ticket.
