Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Lawn Food is a pre emergent lawn treatment that stops crabgrass and other seeds from germinating while feeding the lawn. The comments also point to practical timing cues, like applying before soil temperatures reach about 55 degrees or when forsythia blooms, and watering it in or spreading it before rain. The main caution is that it also blocks new grass seed, so overseeding has to wait. Some also feel it is too late in warmer areas or less effective than pro grade options.

  • The active ingredient can prevent crabgrass and other seeds from germinating.

  • Timing guidance using ground temperature or forsythia bloom can help align application with local conditions.

  • Watering in after spreading before rain can support the preventer's performance.

  • Buying multiple bags can provide enough supply for next season after an earlier application.

  • Warm spring soil temperatures can make pre-emergent timing too late, requiring post-emergent control instead.

  • The preventer can also stop new grass seed from germinating, limiting overseeding options.

  • The fertilizer component may be phosphorus-free, which can reduce components and raise effective cost.

  • Some guidance claims this product may require much more quantity to match professional-grade results.

It halts crabgrass preventer? So if I already put on crabgrass preventer, this will halt it and allow crabgrass to grow?
Yes. Two negatives = One positive.

2 things to keep in mind: 1️⃣ This will also prevent new gras seed from germinating. So, you cannot overseed at the most beneficial time of the year. 2️⃣ All of the lawn fertilizers are now devoid of phosphorous; one of the most beneficial components of fertilizer. So, all the lawn fertilizers are now missing 1/3 of the components they used to have ... and they have raised the prices 🤔Brilliant buisness plan; provide less at a higher cost 💰💰💰 Go get yourself some 12-12-12 general use fertilizer at a fraction of the price and pull the crabby's out by hand before they go to seed in the early fall. No more crabby's ... no more poison in your lawn 😉

Not in upstate NY. If you have any forsythia bushes (or neighbors), you wait for that to bloom (bright yellow flower)and that's your key to getting this Crabgrass preventer down.
