The Coway Airmega 300 comes across as a strong whole room air purifier with quiet, effective filtration and enough coverage for large spaces. It is praised for keeping allergies under control, handling dust well, and still working reliably after years of use. The prefilter also traps a surprising amount of dust, which makes upkeep feel worthwhile. The main drawback is filter cost, since original replacements are expensive and rarely discounted. A dependable pick if you want cleaner air and can live with pricier maintenance.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes, OEM replacement filters are reported to be expensive and rarely discounted. Some owners use third-party filters every six months to keep costs down, but others prefer original filters because non-OEM options can smell bad.

  • Yes. It is reported to keep allergies under control, and the prefilter collects a lot of dust. For visible dust and everyday air cleaning, it performs well; for fine particles, it still depends on using proper purifier filters rather than DIY setups.

  • It can cover large areas on paper, but real-world performance depends on room layout, walls, and where you place it. For bigger homes, multiple units may work better than relying on one purifier alone.

  • Yes. It has been bought for $300 before, and this $248.49 price is described as a great deal for a unit that has held up well over time. Long-term owners report it still works after years of use.

If it's like the 400, you can get the aftermarket(non OEM) filters for cheap on Amazon.

Thank you! Are the copycat replacements from no-name companies any good? There seem to be quite a few on sale for around $30/2 on Amazon. Here's one random example: https://a.co/d/0cA82JGu

I use a 4 pack of HVAC filters duct taped together to form a box. Carboard on the bottom. Box fan on the top. The fan is orientated to suck air in through the filters. All and all its' 20 bucks for the filters which are 1 time use but last a long time, 20 bucks for the fan, which is resuable, and about 5 bucks in duct tape every time I want to make a new one. Looks janky but works awesome.

Your filter solution is not catching the particulates these devices are advertising to do. Not saying it's a bad option, because like you mentioned the price but it's limited functionality

They do have there purpose, but they aren't replacement for a good air purifier.Your setup just isn't going to be able to capture the fine particles. If visible dust particles is your concern, then that is doing its job very well for very cheap.

I bought the S version of this model back in 2019. I like it and it still works. I paid $300.

If you have a 3d printer you can print reusable supports for it instead of using duct tape

I used a box fan setup during COVID and upgraded to a quieter fan with stronger suction (it really comes down to the fan's power and the filter quality) for about $30. I paired it with 20×20×1 MERV 10 carbon pads—about $47 at the time (replaced every 6 months, now around $64)—and 20×20×4 MERV 13 filters for about $78 (replaced annually, now around $100).

It worked really well during COVID, especially since we didn't have many visitors. In 2023–2024, I switched to a few different air purifiers, including the Airmega 300 and 400, along with some other brands when they were on sale.

The box fan setup is still great for the basement, but for the living room, I prefer something more aesthetically pleasing. This is just my personal preference.

I got 400 for $350 but I would rather get add'l units depending on your home layout. Even if you have 1000+ sqft of space the performance depends on rooms walls etc..
