This ORICO dock is a 4 bay USB C DAS with hardware RAID, aimed at compact multi drive storage for 2.5 inch SSDs. The 10 Gbps connection is enough for SATA SSDs, and the array could still benefit from multiple drives or separate USB buses for better throughput. The main limitation is the 2.5 inch only design, which rules out 3.5 inch hard drives and makes the value depend on already having suitable SSDs. It fits best as a tidy enclosure for spare 2.5 inch drives.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes. It is a DAS with hardware RAID functions, but it only supports 2.5-inch drives, not 3.5-inch HDDs. That makes it best for SATA SSDs or smaller 2.5-inch externals rather than larger desktop drives.

  • A single 2.5-inch SATA SSD tops out around 500-600MB/s, so one drive won't saturate a 10Gbps link. With four drives, theoretical array throughput can reach about 2.4GB/s, which is roughly 21.2Gbps, so the USB connection can still be a bottleneck depending on the setup.

  • It makes the most sense if you already have spare 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, such as older higher-capacity drives from the SATA era. For buyers starting from scratch, the value is weaker than buying a faster external USB drive or a 3.5-inch version when discounted.

  • Yes. If your machine has more than one USB bus, splitting drives across buses can improve throughput versus putting all four on one bus. Software RAID can also make the enclosure more useful, especially for HDD-based setups.

Yeah, I was about to get it but then noticed that it is only for 2.5" disks. This price with 3.5" drives would have been great since the larger HDD have speeds below 10Gbps anyway.

2.5" seems like a weird design choice unless you have a bunch of low mileage larger capacity SSDs leftover from the end of SATA era.

I don't think you'd see a difference.

10gb connections to 2.5 ssd limited to 600mb max, so even with 40gb connection wouldn't benefit at all. 10gb plenty speed for this kind of application. 40gb connection speed would only benefit if using m.2 drives other than that is a waste of speed

Confidently Incorrect. You are comparing SATA interface for ONE drive. That's not the drive arreay max. Theoretical max would be 4*600=2400MBps. = 21.2Gbps.

This is just a 2.5" enclosure.

This is garbage they have laying around that they could just slap paint on it and sell.

IF and a big IF you had 4 512GB 2.5" SATA top dog SSD's. Then you'd be spending $99 to buy some janky ass box. Instead of buying a currently AT THIS TIME $200 2TB external FASTER USB drive.

Nobody afforded greater than 512GB 2.5" drives. m.2 lowered in price faster nvme or SATA keyed. And was higher performance before greater than 512GB 2.5" drives that were budget oriented for retrofits came around.

I have bunch of wd passports. I don't see why 2.5 is a weird design. It's a perfect design, I just need to check if I can shuck my wd passports and one Toshiba external 2.5.
Is there a website for this info? Finally I can get rid of individual drives, but worried some of these enclosures corrupt data...

It's unfortunate that this docking station is only limited to 2.5" drives.
