This ORICO dock is a 4 bay USB C DAS with hardware RAID, aimed at compact multi drive storage for 2.5 inch SSDs. The 10 Gbps connection is enough for SATA SSDs, and the array could still benefit from multiple drives or separate USB buses for better throughput. The main limitation is the 2.5 inch only design, which rules out 3.5 inch hard drives and makes the value depend on already having suitable SSDs. It fits best as a tidy enclosure for spare 2.5 inch drives.

Common Questions (4)

  • Yes. It is a DAS with hardware RAID functions, but it only supports 2.5-inch drives, not 3.5-inch HDDs. That makes it best for SATA SSDs or smaller 2.5-inch externals rather than larger desktop drives.

  • A single 2.5-inch SATA SSD tops out around 500-600MB/s, so one drive won't saturate a 10Gbps link. With four drives, theoretical array throughput can reach about 2.4GB/s, which is roughly 21.2Gbps, so the USB connection can still be a bottleneck depending on the setup.

  • It makes the most sense if you already have spare 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, such as older higher-capacity drives from the SATA era. For buyers starting from scratch, the value is weaker than buying a faster external USB drive or a 3.5-inch version when discounted.

  • Yes. If your machine has more than one USB bus, splitting drives across buses can improve throughput versus putting all four on one bus. Software RAID can also make the enclosure more useful, especially for HDD-based setups.

Thanks for sharing this, looks like a solid price!
Post from an account with only 10 rep points that does not participate within the community always raises red flags for me. A good deal should be able to stand on its own without external influence. Because of this and comments by new accounts without reputation: I will be passing.

10gb connections to 2.5 ssd limited to 600mb max, so even with 40gb connection wouldn't benefit at all. 10gb plenty speed for this kind of application. 40gb connection speed would only benefit if using m.2 drives other than that is a waste of speed
I think you are confusing MB And Mb. 500-600MB/s is 4gb/s to 4.8gb/s per drive. You wouldn't saturate a 40gb)s connection, but it would be almost twice as fast.

You can't teach average person math. You certainly can't reach complacent average person by saying anything that requires understating reasoning

Confidently Incorrect. You are comparing SATA interface for ONE drive. That's not the drive arreay max. Theoretical max would be 4*600=2400MBps. = 21.2Gbps.
Often forgotten by people.

Though there is something to be said, depending on your machine whether you have more than 1 USB bus; if so you could theoretically see better throughput in certain configurations (i.e. 2 drives per usb bus) vs 4 drives on one bus.

But if your using HDD's I think this is a good decent balance of convenience and size without a lot of clutter. There are some interesting software raid solutions that could also make this pretty good.
