*was at Walmart the other day on ON THE SHELF (not a random 3rd party vendor on the website) they had 1TB 2280 drives for $299. 1 year ago I bought the same drive, at the same WM for $59

Yeah, retail prices are nuts right now. The secondary market is doubled, but you can still get SSDs and RAM on eBay for reasonable prices. I know $100-$130 for a decent Micron 1TB is hard to swallow after they were half that price a year ago, so it's frustrating to see the datacenter bubble driving up costs for consumers.

Samsung NVMe SSDs in particular seem to command absurd premiums on Amazon, but you can still find quality brands like Kingston, WD and Crucial for $150-$170 for 1TB new on Amazon.

You're definitely better off buying DDR5 from eBay. It's like less than half the cost of retail right now for a 2x8GB DDR5 SODIMM kit.

I agree with everything you said OrangeJulius (apologies I know it's a bit strange addressing you by your username Stick Out Tongue but the slickdeals website is acting a bit wonky for me right now so I'm not sure if this will show up as a reply to your comment like it's supposed to)... but I was wondering , when you say buy DDR5 from ebay do you mean buy used? Which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all especially given AI centers gobbling up RAM and related PC parts that rely on ram ...

Pretty cool concept, I wonder if this bypasses corporate usb lockdown. I know for example on my dell dock, it recognized USB storage and were locked but the SD card allowed me to copy files.

Yes indeed. I always buy used RAM. Half the price, exactly the same performance. Where I'm more discerning is storage, as SSDs do have a useful lifespan depending on how many writes they've seen. The lower the capacity, the more likely the drive will have a lower lifespan under normal usage conditions. Most modern, large capacity (1TB+) SSDs will never run out of writable sectors, but I have seen a few 64-250GB SSDs either hit that barrier and fail, or get dangerously close.

Bought one last time, it recognized nvme drive, but read/write speed is really slow like hdd.
