These are $600-700 used. I wouldn't buy a new a6400 in 2026. I have an a6300, and it's a good camera, but it's definitely showing its age. If you must buy new, the a6700 is a much better way to spend your money. Alternatively, the ZVE10 II is basically a more modernized a6400 with no mechanical shutter (which is a big tradeoff if you're primarily doing photography). If you're willing to go Lumix or Fujifilm, there's even better options in this ballpark in the S9 and X-M5.

I had the a6400. The flash was good. No ibis. Pictures looked amazing with my sigma 24-70 f2.8. Moved onto the a6600. Picture quality same but got IBIS for videos.
Moved up to a6700. Autofocus was amazing but image quality wasn't any different from a6400.
buy the a6400 and spend money on good glass .

After the A6700 came out, I quickly bought the A6600 after watching and reading reviews.

Yeah, when you only have 8-bit 4:2:0 video and half the phase detection points for AF and a processor that can't do AI subject recognition, the camera runs a little cooler and uses less battery.

The a6700 also has the newer menu that is much easier to navigate.
That being said my shutter malfunctioned with less that 500 shutter counts. Took Sony about a week to get it back to me.
A6700 videos really shine because it can do 4k60p and 4k120p w/crop.
I did use the a6700 for volleyball video and pictures. The focus was about 80% and didn't always lock onto the target I wanted. Might be a little user error. It did get some amazing shuts but so did my old canon t3 dslr.
I never did overheat.

A6400 is definitely more than good enough for photography. I'd strongly advocate buying one used though. You gain very little buying it new: you're just spending more for a very limited manufacturing defect warranty. If you have enough free cash to spend >$100 on a limited warranty, you probably have enough cash to bump up to a more refined option.

What do you guys think about the 6700 vs 6400 for night shots (northern lights etc) and wildlife/landscape? I understand glass is the big factor, but I'm torn.

I'm late, but the main thing you're losing for that purpose on the a6400 is IBIS. Without stabilization it's harder to use slow shutter speeds appropriate to night shots, or to shoot handheld using telephoto focal lengths appropriate to wildlife. In either case a tripod will be 10x more effective than IBIS. Also I think most Sony telephotos which are good for wildlife have OSS. If you insist on spending double on the body then maybe look for a used full frame so you can run higher ISO without adding as much noise - and also get higher MP rating for more crop potential.

My brother does bird photography handheld with a Sony 400-800 mounted on an a6100 and gets good shots.
