One complaint about this is that the pergola is designed with rainwater discharging into the pillars through a hole at the bottom. This generally works but you will need to clean it out on ocassion. However, the hole is very small so any debris in there is very hard to get out.

My back yard is south facing and gets a lot of sun, so I've wanted some sort of shade structure since we moved in.
Pretty sure my town wants a permit though...and I'm not sure about securing it to my patio. I *think* my patio is stamped concrete that is holding up quite well (no crack or issues in the main area, only a few spots around the edges), but I don't know how thick it is and would be hesitant to anchor point loads like this to it.
Other option is to come up with some sort of shade sail arrangement where I can sink posts either outside the patio, or cut holes in the patio for them.
